The location of the first Melt Festival was the Bernsteinsee in Velten in Brandenburg, the second time the festival was held at the Lärz airfield . In 1999, the melt was first on the Ferropolis -Gelände in Gräfenhainichen place where, he has made to date once a year.

In 2003, the festival had to pause due to reluctant sponsorship and adverse weather conditions. After a commitment by Intro magazine , the Melt returned in 2004 with a revised concept. The Melt Festival combines electronic music and rock sound.

The choice of the venue is also what makes the Melt so special: the live acts play in the open-air museum for open-cast lignite mining, the “Ferropolis” in Graefenhainichen, between gigantic open-cast mining equipment. An arena reminiscent of a Roman amphitheater opens up in the center of the venue . The amphitheater has been reserved for the large open-air stage since 2008. The second (covered) large stage (Gemini Stage) has been outside since then. In addition to the Gemini Stage and other stages at different locations on the site, the Big Wheel Stage is a permanent fixture. This is an open-air stage for DJs and electronic live acts, which is arranged in or under one of the large bucket wheel excavators . The predominant here is a club or rave atmosphere.

The Sleepless Floor is also located between the actual festival site and the campground. There is a continuous celebration here on Saturday and Sunday.
