Metronomy is a British band whose music is indietronics and, more recently, electro-pop . It was founded in 1999 by Joseph Mount, who acts as the group's songwriter, sings and plays keyboard and guitar. Other band members are currently Oscar Cash (keyboard, melodica, saxophone), Gbenga Adelekan (bass), Anna Prior (drums) and Michael Lovett (guitar, keyboard).
In addition to the four albums with original titles, Joseph Mount also published numerous remixes of the works of other artists under the name Metronomy.
history
Metronomy was founded in 1999 by Joseph Mount (* 1982 ) in Totnes . The then 16-year-old began to write his first songs under the influence of experimental electronic music (for example by Autechre and LFO ). After moving to Brighton , he was signed to the Holiphonic label. In 2006 Metronomy released their debut album, Pip Paine (Pay The $ 5000 You Owe) , which mainly contains instrumental pieces.
After the song You Could Easily Have Me was played quite often by DJs and Metronomy found more and more fans in the UK , Joseph Mount teamed up with his schoolmates Cash and Stebbing and the group gave their first live performances. During this time she was best known for her remixes, which Mount published in large numbers, partly as background music for animated video clips. For example, he remixed songs by Goldfrapp , Ladytron , Charlotte Gainsbourg , Lykke Li , Gorillaz and Britney Spears .
After contract difficulties, Metronomy switched to the Because Music label . There, in 2008, the group's second album, Nights Out , was released, which is characterized by more vocal pieces that can be assigned primarily to electro-pop. It reached number 106 on the UK charts and made a significant contribution to the group's national profile.
In May 2009 Stebbing officially left Metronomy to promote his own band Your Twenties , but remained on friendly terms with the group and later performed with them occasionally. Therefore Anna Prior and Gbenga Adelekan came to Metronomy as new band members.
In April 2011 Metronomy's most commercially successful album to date, The English Riviera , was released. It reached number 28 in the UK charts and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize (album of the year). It also made it into the Swiss charts for a short time. Internationally, the group is also best known in France, where The English Riviera made it to 22nd place and stayed in the top 150 for over a year. The following year, The English Riviera Unreleased Remixes was released as MP3, a selection of previously unreleased remixes of the tracks on the album. They come from Ewan Pearson , Camo & Krooked and Clock Opera , among others .
In 2012 Metronomy also released the compilation Late Night Tales in the mix album series of the independent label of the same name . The album was released on LP and CD.
Metronomy's fourth studio album, Love Letters , was released two years later and contained ten songs on the subject of love, separation and longing. It was created in Toe Rag Studios in Hackney , a studio that exclusively uses analog technology. According to Joseph Mount, this was a deliberately backward-looking experiment with which he wanted to prove to himself and others that Metronomy was not just a "modern band" whose music anyone could make. A first song, I'm Aquarius , was released as MP3 on November 11, 2013, and then as a CD and vinyl EP. In March 2014 the album was finally released on Because Music. It received mostly positive reviews and reached number 7 on the British and French charts. In the same year two more single releases, Love Letters and Reservoir , were released. The most successful of these was the single Love Letters , which stayed in the French charts for 11 weeks, with a top position at position 44.
The album Metronomy Forever was released on September 19, 2019 . The web radio station ByteFM described the pre-release single "Salted Caramel Ice Cream" as "friendly, grooving synth-funk". In Germany, the song was best known through a Zalando commercial.
Michael Lovett, who has been a member of the live band since 2014, has also been a full member of the band since 2019.
