Franz Ferdinand is a British indie rock band from Glasgow . Stylistically, the group is partly attributed to Britpop , with their music clearly showing influences from the post-punk of the late 1970s and the New Wave of the early 1980s.
history
As the only member of the band, Robert Hardy attended the Glasgow School of Art .
The band had their first appearances in the chateau , an empty warehouse, which they themselves turned into an illegal meeting place for Glasgow indie bands and art students.
With their second single Take Me Out on the independent label Domino Records , the band immediately made it to number three in the UK sales charts in mid-January 2004 . Her debut album, Franz Ferdinand , also made it to third place on the charts in Great Britain. In the film 9 Songs by British director Michael Winterbottom , Franz Ferdinand and Jacqueline play one of the nine songs in the film. Their achievements were rewarded with two BRIT Awards in 2005 , including Best British Band. So far they have appeared on the cover of the German music magazines SPEX (February 2004), Visions (March 2004, February 2005 and October 2005), Rolling Stone (December 2004) and Musikexpress (October 2005, February 2009 and September 2013).
The German influence in the band comes from the guitarist Nick McCarthy , who attended high school in Bad Aibling in Upper Bavaria and studied piano and double bass in Munich . During his time in Munich he played with the folk punk band Kamerakino and for almost five years with the Krautrock musician collective Embryo . For a while, the song Tell Her Tonight was offered for download on the official website in a German version , and the end sequence of the song Darts of Pleasure is in German; these last sentences “My name is super fantastic! I drink champagne with salmon fish! ”Are to be understood as a kind of allusion because of the shape. In addition, there is a song called Aufachse , which is named after the television series of the same name .
On September 30, 2005, the group released their second album You Could Have It So Much Better . The album marks a slight stylistic change to more serious themes and chords, which are clearly rockier and equipped with less artificial sounds. The influence of the Beatles on singer Kapranos can also be heard here and there. A live DVD was released on November 25, 2005, on which two concerts, various live songs and karaoke versions of their hits can be found.
The third studio album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand , was released on January 23, 2009. The first single is called Ulysses . This album is very different from its predecessors: the sound is raw, less rocky and synthesizers and drum machines are used.
As part of an advertising campaign for the French fashion label Dior , actress Marion Cotillard recorded the song The Eyes of Mars , which was written by Franz Ferdinand, in 2010 . In early 2010 the band also contributed the song The Lobster Quadrille to the CD Almost Alice, which was composed and inspired by Tim Burton's remake of Alice in Wonderland .
In August 2013, the fourth studio album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action was released .
In 2015, the band began working with Sparks under the name FFS and released a studio album of the same name in the same year. In July 2016, Nick McCarthy announced that he was leaving the band.
On February 9, 2018, the fifth studio album Always Ascending was released .
Band name
The band was about to make their fifth appearance, but was still nameless. In a discussion about archdukes, initiated by the racehorse “The Archduke”, the band also came to speak of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand , whose assassination sparked the First World War . “Bob and Nick's Band” also want to change the world with their music, and since they liked the sound of the name, they called themselves “Franz Ferdinand” from then on. The name of the band is pronounced German.
