Tonight: Franz Ferdinand is the third music album by the Scottish rock music group Franz Ferdinand . It was released by Domino Records on January 26th, 2009 in the UK.

Ulysses was released as the first single on January 19, 2009 and can be heard as a stream on the band's Myspace page. It's a concept album that is about a party night and its effects the next morning. The album received mostly good reviews.

production

admission

Although they had already written eight songs during the 2005 tour, Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy decided to write completely new songs because they wanted "the album to sound completely new and completely different from anything they had done before". After recording their second album in one go, Kapranos emphasized that the band wanted to take their time this time. He said, “This time around we wanted to spend more time developing and I think we wanted to give the songs and sounds the time to unfold before we moved on to writing an album and recording more music and ideas, not to say , life itself. And when I say 'life' I mean life off the beaten track, because I would not call life in an orderly manner life. "

Franz Ferdinand began working on the third studio album in early 2007. The album should have been recorded with producer Brian Higgins , but in March 2008 they parted ways. Drummer, Paul Thomson, said, “We wrote with Higgins for a while and at first we thought we'd work with him more, but it didn't really fit. We just noticed that we weren't actually a pop group. ”However, they also said that they hadn't given up the pop concept yet. Some of the songs on the album were written and produced in the old town hall of Govan , Scotland . The band initially settled there after touring for a year to boost sales of their second album (You Could Have It So Much Better) and mainly used it to store and rehearse their equipment.

style

As reported, the album was inspired by: “The strong dub sound of Jamaican reggae stars”. Alex Kapranos also said that the album is a “streak of electronica” but at the same time a mix of influences. He went on to comment that it had "... the heavy bass and space echo you would find on a dub mix." In an interview with Rolling Stone , Kapranos stated that the album was more of a dance than a rock recording. In an interview with Billboard.com, Kapranos said, "It's the opposite of punk / pop, which took something that was wonderful and removed all the dirt." He also said the band used Russian Polyvox synthesizers.

According to an XFM article in which Alex stated, “We're one of those bands that can do whatever they want, they always end up sounding the same, but this time around there are some new influences. I mean the drums are a little different. Paul [Thomson] has heard a lot of African material, and you can tell. ”The album shows African influences. The song "No You Girls" uses a human skeleton for percussion. “ Tonight is more of a concept album that explores the ups and downs associated with an evening of debauchery. This album covers everything from the initial excitement of a young evening to the daze the morning after, ”wrote one reviewer.

Cover and title

The album artwork is a photograph taken by Søren Solkær Starbird just after midnight behind the Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow . To NME, drummer Paul Thomson said: "We wanted to get a Weegee vibe - that famous New York crime scene photographer from the '40s and' 50s." It is part of a series of pictures where the band took pictures with photographers in different cities where they landed. The band's weblog states that the series of images is described as 'imaginary crime scenes , invaded by the photographer', and 'a slice of night frozen by flash'.

On September 20, 2008, it was announced that work on the album would be finished, but there was still no title. On October 7, 2008, Vanity Fair reporter Michael Hogan interviewed Alex and Paul, who confirmed that their third studio album would be called Tonight: Franz Ferdinand and that the release date was given a week later.

publication

In August 2008, Franz Ferdinand released “ Lucid Dreams ” on iTunes and made it available to listen to on their official website. The title is also featured on the Madden NFL 09 soundtrack.

However, the band stated on their website that Lucid Dreams was not a single. The track on the album is different from this version.

"Ulysses" was selected as the first single and was released on January 19, 2009. The song was first played on BBC Radio 1 on November 17, 2008. It was available in the iTunes Store for North America from December 2, 2009 in the UK on January 18, 2009.

"No You Girls" was released on April 6, 2009 as a single. The song is currently used in advertising for the iPod touch .

A live version of What She Came For was made available as a free download from Franz Ferdinand's NME Music website on December 18, 2008. Then on January 9th, No You Girls was released on iTunes; on January 13th as a free download on Myspace Music. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand was broadcast on January 22nd as a stream on the band's official Myspace profile.

Cant Stop Feeling was released as the next single in July 2009; What She Came For followed at the end of August .

Blood Bonus Disc

On its first release date, January 26th, 2009, the album was available as a box set containing the entire album on 6 7-inch vinyl singles and as a 2-disc limited edition. This special edition was only available in Europe and included a bonus disc called Blood on which the dub version of the album's tracks can be heard.

Reviews

Tonight received generally good reviews with a total of 70 on Metacritic out of 32 reviews. It didn't get the level of critical acclaim that their first album did. The Clash magazine commented that it could be the band to date, "the most complete work. Well worth the time to wait and honestly better than hoped. " The Financial Post said," Tonight is the band's best album: Paradoxically, they have allowed themselves to break away from their signature tension by devising structures in which they are could really get started. The Telegraph commented that Tonight: Franz Ferdinand was a melody-packed confirmation of everything that has made the band so popular so far, in a very contemporary sounding, keyboard-driven setting.

The Trades : “The album is more of an evolutionary step for the band than a revolutionary one. Tonight: Franz Ferdinand proves smart and danceable that Franz Ferdinand are masters of dance rock. "

NBC: "Franz Ferdinand have once again managed to surpass themselves with their best album so far."

The reviews from Uncut and The Guardian have been less enthusiastic. Uncut said that the album sounds dry and superficial and the songs are too similar to each other and to other Franz Ferdinand songs.

The Guardian noted, "Even if Franz's songwriting has gotten further than it was, it's still not deeper." And "They will keep trying to move your hips because they will never win your hearts."

That was underscored by the criticism from the Daily Mail , who described the album as "a sterile, disgusting thing that fails to hit the mark as usual."

The Paste Magazine was similarly strict, the aussagend the "leering" votes, the production "horrific" and the lyrics "seem to lack Both heart and brain" were and summarized that "shows the work stoppage that Franz either confused or are too lazy to move forward. "

success

The album made it to number 2 on the UK Album Chart and 9 on the Billboard 200 in the US; sold about 31,000 times in the first week. However, it dropped 50 seats on the Billboard 200 from # 9 to # 59 in the second week.

Remarks

  1. ... quite new, to be quite different sounding from everything we've ever done before.
  2. This time we wanted to spend more time developing, and also, I suppose, allowing songs and sounds to evolve more before we ended up writing an album, and absorbing more music and ideas and, I suppose, life itself. And when I say life, I mean life off the road, because I wouldn't classify life on the road as real life.
  3. We wrote with Higgins for a while and initially we thought we'd work more with him but it didn't really work out. We just realized that we're not really a pop group.
  4. heavy dub sound of Jamaican reggae stars.
  5. We're one of these bands that are always gonna sound the same no matter what we do, but there are other influences there. I guess the drums are a little different, Paul has been listening to a lot of African stuff so that's gonna come through.
  6. This album covers all its bases from the initial excitement of the early evening to the numbness of the morning after
  7. ^ The band's most complete work to date. Worth the wait, and in all honesty better than we could ever have hoped for.
  8. Tonight” is the band's best album: Paradoxically, they've allowed themselves a degree of release from their characteristic tension by creating structures within which they can cut loose.
  9. this [album] is an evolutionary step for the band rather than a revolutionary one. Smart and danceable, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand proves that Franz Ferdinand are the masters of dance-rock.
  10. Franz Ferdinand has once again managed to outdo themselves with their best album to date.
  11. "if Franz's songwriting is broader than it was, it is still no deeper" and that "they'll keep trying to move your hips because they know they'll never win your heart."
  12. ^ A sterile, unwelcoming affair that fails to pack the band's usual punch.
  13. the layoff suggests that Franz is either too confused or too lazy to move forward.
