Intro was a magazine for pop culture and lifestyle based in Cologne , which reports not only on music but also on topics such as film , fashion , society , literature and video games . The editor-in-chief was occupied by Daniel Koch and Wolfgang Frömberg (deputy).

The magazine, which was initially published every two months, later monthly and finally ten times a year (with double issues for December / January and July / August), was the largest German-language magazine of its kind with a circulation of around 100,000 and was available free of charge at around 1,500 delivery points, among others distributed in venues and retail outlets throughout Germany and was also available as a paid subscription.

The publisher of the same name also acts as publisher for other media with the magazines Festivalguide , Praise & Projektor , and is a shareholder in the football magazine 11 Freunde .

The last regular issue appeared in May 2018.

history

Intro was founded in 1991 by publisher Matthias Hörstmann in Melle -Dratum, Lower Saxony . The first edition appeared in the same year with a circulation of around 6,000 copies. In 1995 he moved to Osnabrück, which went hand in hand with the first permanent positions, including Stephan Glietsch as the new editor-in-chief. One year later, intro.de, an online offshoot, was established that was one of the first German-language music magazines on the Internet. With the move to Cologne in 2000, the workforce and office space doubled and the circulation grew to more than 100,000 copies. In its long history, Intro was able to win over many distinguished authors, including Martin Büsser , Jens Friebe , Klaus Walter , Leo Fischer and Ada Blitzkrieg. The magazine was also significantly influenced by the long-time editors-in-chief Thomas Venker and Linus Volkmann .

further activities

Intro also appears again and again as a concert and festival organizer. In 2004 the publisher took over the Melt Festival , which is now closely associated with Intro. Later, with participation in the Berlin Festival , Splash Festival and Lollapalooza Berlin, other major events followed, which are regularly supplemented with their own series of concerts such as Intro Intim , Superintim or Introducing . In 2008 the intro editorial team wrote a 24-page booklet for the German-language double DVD of the feature film 24 Hour Party People as a special edition, with background information about the music manager Tony Wilson and his record company Factory Records .

reception

In 2013, the industry magazine Horizont wrote about Intro: “In the meantime, the fanzine of the past is much more than the largest free music magazine in Germany. It is the heart of the Hörstmann Group (HUG) and a prime example of how a single brand can become a huge pop culture network. "

In 2008 Intro.de received the Grimme Online Award in the culture and entertainment category. Among other things, it said: “The website for the monthly music magazine Intro goes far beyond the printed content. With the comprehensive news features, the news ticker and an additional editorial blog, the user is always up to date. "
