Screwball

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The screwball (Engl. For "screw throw") is a throwing technique of a pitcher in baseball . Here, the baseball is thrown outwards with a twist as seen from the thrower . Thus, the screwball differs from other spin throws like the curveball or the slider , which break out either inwards and / or downwards.

Two of the most famous screwball pitchers were Carl Hubbell and Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants . Their screwballs were considered so fancy by the baseball world of that time that the word screwball in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary since the 1930s has literally been synonymous with a "bizarre, eccentric or crazy person" (Engl .: a screwball is a whimsical, eccentric or crazy person ) applies. The Screwball is the namesake of the screwball comedy , in which such unusual characters play the leading role.
