The Scissor Sisters (formerly Dead Lesbian and the Fibrillating Scissor Sisters ) are a five-piece American band from New York . They were founded in 2001 by Jake Shears and Babydaddy. The band's style and demeanor are heavily influenced by the New York gay scene. Their music is a mixture of disco , dance , rock and funk , based on the models Elton John , Duran Duran , Roxy Music and above all the Bee Gees . The name of the band is derived from a US term for tribadie .
history
First singles success and album Scissor Sisters
The Scissor Sisters released their first single Laura in the summer of 2003 with moderate success. Their breakthrough came in the band in early 2004 with the release of Comfortably Numb , a disco - Cover of the song of the same name by Pink Floyd . The subsequent singles Take Your Mama , the re-released Laura and Mary were also successful in the British charts. With Filthy / Gorgeous they achieved a top 5 hit in January 2004.
All singles come from the debut album Scissor Sisters , which reached number one on the BBC charts in July 2004. With over a million units sold, it became the most successful album of the year. The band was honored for this success at the Brit Awards 2005 - they received first prize in the categories International Group , International Breakthrough and International Album .
Outside of Great Britain, they initially failed to make their big breakthrough. Thanks to the successful collaboration between Jake Shears and Babydaddy with Kylie Minogue - whose hit single I Believe in You they produced at the end of 2004 - the Scissor Sisters also gained greater attention in other European countries. They were able to reach higher chart positions in the Scandinavian countries (including number 13 in the Swedish LP charts), as well as in New Zealand (number 11 for the single Take Your Mama ).
Ta-Dah album and personnel change
With the single I Don't Feel Like Dancin ' , the first release from the second album Ta-Dah , they reached the top of the British and German charts for the first time in September 2006. The song was written in collaboration with Elton John , who also contributed piano passages to this.
In 2008 the band officially announced the separation from their drummer Patrick "Paddy Boom" Seacor "in all friendship". On the Kiss-You-Off tour in 2007 he was replaced by Randy "Randy Real" Schrager, who however does not have the status of a regular band member - only the four remaining members are listed on the band's official website.
Night Work album
The third album by the New York band was released on June 28, 2010 and contains 12 songs. The first single Fire With Fire had its radio premiere on May 7, 2010 in Great Britain. The Scissor Sisters released a clip from Invisible Light back in April . The album was produced by Stuart Price , who had previously produced the albums Confessions on a Dance Floor by Madonna and Day & Age (with the single Human ) by the Killers . According to singer Jake Shears, most of the lyrics on the album are not suitable for minors. The cover is adorned with a photo by Peter Reed by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe .
Magic Hour album
The fourth studio album by the Scissor Sisters was released on May 28, 2012. In some cases it lagged significantly behind the success of the two previous albums, although it still reached number 4 in the UK.
