The Killers are an American rock band from Las Vegas , Nevada formed in 2001. The name comes from a fictional band of the same name from the music video for the song Crystal by New Order . To date they have sold almost 13 million copies of their four albums Hot Fuss , Sam's Town , Day & Age and Battle Born , as well as the rarities and B-side compilation Sawdust .
history
Foundation (2001–2002)
Dave Keuning placed an advertisement in a newspaper recruiting members for a new band. Brandon Flowers saw this ad and decided to leave his old band called Response Blush and start something new. Flowers and Keuning shared the fact that they are both fans of the band Oasis . So they were inspired by this band for their first single, Mr. Brightside . Later the other two band members Ronnie Vannucci and Mark Stoermer joined them through auditions.
Hot Fuss (2003-2006)
The Killers released their album Hot Fuss in June 2004 in the UK with Marrakesh Records , and in the US with Island Records . Hot Fuss already received 4 × platinum. The single releases from this album are Mr. Brightside , which immediately hit the top 10 in Great Britain, All These Things That I've Done and Somebody Told Me .
The song All These Things That I've Done is played at the end of the film Mord und Margaritas .
Sam's Town (2006-2007)
Sam's Town , the band 's second album, reached number 2 in the US charts in the first week, and in Great Britain it entered the album charts at number 1. It was influenced by the works of U2 , Bruce Springsteen , Tom Petty and others. The name refers to Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall , a hotel and casino in Las Vegas, the band's hometown. The woman wearing a bikini on the cover of the CD is singer and model Felice LaZae.
At the BRIT Awards on February 14, 2007 they won the award for both best international band and with Sam's Town for best international album.
According to their own statement, the Killers were influenced by Queen , U2 , New Order and Muse , to which they dedicated their prize at the EMAs for the best rock album. This is also noticeable in the selection of producers, because The Killers have recruited support from Flood and Alan Moulder, who have worked with U2 many times before, while working on their second album.
In addition, the video for All These Things That I've Done was directed by Anton Corbijn , who is particularly known for his visual results on U2. Tim Burton was won as director for the video clip for Bones in 2006 .
A remix version of Mr. Brightside appears in the German film Keinohrhasen . In the film Love Doesn't Need a Vacation , the song is sung by Cameron Diaz at one point . On the album Disco 4 of the Pet Shop Boys also a PSB remix located Read My Mind , which with additional vocals by Neil Tennant has been expanded.
The Killers also covered several bands and singers, such as Joy Division Shadowplay , Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet or Morrissey Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself . There was also a cover version of Helter Skelter of the Beatles , together with the Vines .
Sawdust (2007-2008)
Her third album Sawdust contains B-sides of the previous singles, rarities and new songs. It was released in November 2007. The album's first single, Tranquilize , which was created in collaboration with Lou Reed , was released in October 2007.
Day & Age (2008-2010)
In November 2008 her third studio album was released with the title Day & Age . Stuart Price was the producer . The first single Human was originally planned for Sawdust .
Today The Killers are a successful rock band on Island Records in America and Europe . They celebrated great success with singles like Human , Somebody Told Me or All These Things That I've Done . The latter was used in a 2008 commercial for Nike , the title Human in 2009 in a Sky Germany commercial . For The World We Live In originally a release date in Germany stood at who has been, however, withdrawn. In the USA, A Dustland Fairytale was released instead of the latter . Shadowplay from the Sawdust album was used by Dior in a 2009 commercial.
Break (2010-2011)
In January 2010 The Killers announced that they would take a longer break after the last concerts of the "Day & Age" tour. They would have to recover after six years, which they were almost exclusively in terms of band, as guitarist Keuning announced. This break should not mean the separation from The Killers.
Brandon Flowers used this time to work on a solo album called Flamingo , which was released on September 3, 2010. Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci also released their own solo albums with Another Life and Big Talk during the band's break .
As in previous years, a Christmas song was released in December 2010. The proceeds from the Single Boots will go to charity. The Killers made their live comeback at the Lollapalooza Festival 2011 in Chile. The (RED) Christmas EP was also released in December 2011 for a charitable cause.
Battle Born (2012)
In September 2012 the fourth studio album by the Killers was released. It was published in Germany on September 14, 2012. According to the band, it is stylistically not based on Day & Age , but is more guitar-heavy. The title is Battle Born , an allusion to the hard side of the American way of life .
“In a sense, all Americans are battle born. Our ancestors came here for something better. "
Runaways is the first single from the album and was heard for the first time on July 10, 2012 on various American radio stations.
On November 11, 2012, The Killers performed at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2012 in Frankfurt am Main and on November 10, 2013 at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2013 in Amsterdam.
The fifth studio album was released on September 22, 2017 under the title Wonderful Wonderful .
Activism and philanthropy
The band played at the invitation of US President Barack Obama in front of the White House on July 4, 2010 as part of the American Independence Day celebrations, which Flowers described as a "monumental honor". Flowers, Keuning, and Stoermer also played for Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , who was about to be re-elected, in a July 8, 2010 election rally in Nevada .
Since 2006, the Killers have released annual Christmas singles and videos in support of the Product Red aid organization and its work against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
