action

The conscience-plagued contract killer Julian Noble befriends the honest businessman Danny Wright in Mexico. Danny tells Julian that his son has died. To change the subject, Julian tells a vulgar joke. Danny considers this behavior to be disrespectful, whereupon the two go their separate ways for the time being. Danny has to stay in Mexico for renegotiations with a business partner because his main competitor has overtaken him, and so he meets Julian again. He invites him to a bullfight to apologize for his faux pas. During the event, Julian talks about his “job” as a “mediator of deaths”, as he calls it himself, and shows him, at Danny's request, how he would kill a target chosen by him at random. Danny is visibly euphoric and his doubts about the truth of Julian's crude assertion have been removed. After he has completed an assignment, he receives another from his client, Mr. Stick, where he asks Danny for help with a diversionary maneuver. But although this would be rewarded with 50,000 dollars, he indignantly refuses. The following night, Danny sits intoxicated on the balcony of his hotel room in deep despair over the hopelessness of his acquisition, while Julian, drunk, knocks on Danny's room door and tries to apologize. At first it remains unclear whether Danny will open the door, but in the further course of the film it becomes apparent that Julian was left standing in front of the locked door.

Over the next six months, Julian travels the world alone to carry out contract killings in various countries. However, he cannot carry out some of these tasks because he is completely burned out: When looking through his telescopic sight, instead of his target person, he always sees himself as a child in front of his inner eye.

Six months after the first meeting between Julian and Danny in Mexico, Julian rings the doorbell of the Danny and Bean couple that night and tells them about his problem: Mr. Stick, Julian's client, would like to have him eliminated as a confidante and because of his unreliability. Finally, Julian asks Danny again for his help with one last assignment after which he wants to retire.

Danny agrees to help, and together they fly to a racecourse in Tucson . Although Julian at first cannot pull the trigger because he is still suffering from his mental problems, he finally succeeds in committing the murder, as Danny uplifts him mentally and even drives him to act. On the return flight, Julian reveals to his friend that the person killed was not only the target who relieved him, but his client himself, Mr. Stick. They remember their last night at the hotel in Mexico City. At that time, Danny let Julian in and asked him to get his company's main competitor out of the way. In return, he offered to help him with an assassination attempt with a diversionary maneuver. Julian turned down this offer, however, because Danny was too good a person in his eyes, would break psychologically after the murder and from then on would only have bad luck.

Danny is back from Tucson on time to visit their son's grave with Bean on the fourth anniversary of his death. Julian watches them benevolently from a distance and then sticks an envelope with flight tickets to Greece (where he plans to spend the rest of his life with "little Greek women") under the windshield wiper of their car.
