New Order is an English new wave and post punk band from Manchester . She became known in 1983 through Blue Monday , which is still the world's best-selling maxi single on vinyl.

The band succeeded Joy Division , whose members had agreed at the time not to perform under this name if a member should leave the band. When the then front singer Ian Curtis took his own life in May 1980 , the three remaining band members honored their promise out of respect and formed anew under the name New Order.

Members

Guitarist Bernard Sumner (formerly: Bernard Albrecht or Bernard Dicken) took on the role of lead singer at New Order . The band line-up was completed by Peter Hook ( bass ) and Stephen Morris ( drums ), both of whom had also belonged to Joy Division, supplemented by the newly added Gillian Gilbert ( keyboards ). As part of the 2001 tour, Phil Cunningham (keyboards, guitar ) was used for the first time , who from 2004 permanently replaced Gillian Gilbert, who left the band due to a serious illness of her daughter. However, Gilbert has been back since 2011. In the current line-up, Tom Chapman also takes on the bass part of Peter Hook, who left the band in 2007.

history

The first releases of New Order were strongly linked to the music of Joy Division , two of the compositions were still by Ian Curtis , the late singer. New Order later linked the roots of New Wave with the increasingly relevant electronic dance music of the early 1980s. The New Musical Express wrote at the time that New Order was able to combine "electronic sound formulas with more intelligence and sensitivity" than any other pop-rock band.

The greatest success of New Order was the release of the maxi single Blue Monday in 1983. This record, which was released on the independent label Factory Records , is to this day the world's best-selling vinyl maxi single . However, according to Factory boss Tony Wilson , there was no financial success because of the elaborately designed cover in the form of a floppy disk . Only later were the song in the black with several new editions.

In 1986 the two musical approaches, rock and dance, were separated on the two sides of the album on the album Brotherhood , on which one could find the single Bizarre Love Triangle . The 1987 single True Faith was very successful . The song reached number four in the UK and number eight in the German single charts and was repeatedly released as a remix . At the same time, Substance, a compilation of the 12 maxi singles published by then, was released, which was particularly interesting because none of the first New Order singles appeared on an album. In early 1989 the studio album Technique was released , which was partially recorded in Ibiza and is inspired by the local dance club music and acid house .

In the 1980s, the band accompanied and supported the legendary Fac 51 Haçienda club in Manchester, which became a center of the emerging rave - and later also electronic music , and thus helped to shape the Madchester .

For the soccer world championship in 1990 they recorded the piece World in Motion together with several English national soccer players under the name " Englandneworder " . They had their only number one success in the British singles charts. After the record label Factory Records, whose flagship New Order had been since its foundation, went bankrupt in 1992, the next album Republic was released a year later on London Records .

After Republic, New Order was put on hold for the time being. The band members devoted themselves to their side projects in the following years. Bernard Sumner played with Johnny Marr at Electronic , Peter Hook first at Revenge and later Monaco and Stephen Morris / Gillian Gilbert formed under the name The Other Two. In addition, some compilations with single versions and remixes appeared.

New Order returned in 1998 with a live performance at the Reading Festival . In 2001 the comparatively rocking studio album Get Ready was released with the hit single Crystal . Billy Corgan ( The Smashing Pumpkins ) and Bobby Gillespie ( Primal Scream ) are guest singers on the album . The subsequent album Waiting for the Sirens' Call from 2005 was the first with Phil Cunningham and without Gillian Gilbert. The Süddeutsche Zeitung judged: “ […] and today it is clear that there is still no better boys band than this one. […] Touched by your presence, gentlemen! . ” They received the“ Godlike Genius ”award from the New Musical Express for their life's work.

On May 4, 2007, Peter Hook announced the breakup of the band in a telephone interview when he said he and Bernard Sumner would no longer work together. If this was initially received in disbelief because of Hook's slightly ironic tone, he subsequently confirmed the breakup of the band several times in posts on his Myspace page. After some semi-official statements, singer Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris officially announced on July 20, 2007 that New Order had not disbanded. One was disappointed that Hook had announced the separation without having contacted the other band members beforehand, but concluded that Hook no longer wanted to be a member of the band. Regardless of this, New Order continues to exist. Whether there are further plans for the band in the near future has not been announced. Sumner and Cunningham have been going on since 2007 under the name Bad Lieutenant - based on the film of the same name. On October 12, 2009, their debut album , Never Cry Another Tear , was released worldwide .

In June 2011, was released by Warner Music with total a best-of compilation, which will trace the transition from Joy Division to New Order. In addition to remixes of the most famous tracks, the album also contains the previously unreleased new order track Hellbent from 2005.

On December 10, 2011, a concert of the newly formed band (without Peter Hook) took place in London. Since then, New Order has completed a successful world tour in 2012 as well as several acclaimed individual concerts in 2013. In spring 2013, Lost Sirens was released, a long previously announced compilation of outtakes from the time of the recording sessions for Waiting for the Sirens' Call . Peter Hook can still be heard on bass on all songs. In addition, the band announced in the course of the 2013 summer concerts that they would soon go to the studio to work on a regular successor to Waiting for the Sirens' Call . After the single Restless hit stores on July 29, 2015 , the album Music Complete followed on September 25 .

style

New Order's music mixes rock with electronic dance music . They integrate styles such as post-punk and house in an innovative way and are therefore sometimes referred to as an alternative dance band. A trademark is the idiosyncratic bass by Peter Hook, who often plays the melody as the main instrument and leaves the actual bass line to the keyboard . Another special feature is that the title of many songs does not appear in the text. Great importance is attached to the design of the record covers, which have been designed in a mostly minimalist way since the beginning of Peter Saville .
