Olefins is a generic term used especially in the petrochemical industry for all acyclic and cyclic hydrocarbons with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds . Aromatic compounds are excluded from this . All alkenes , cycloalkenes and polyenes are considered olefins .
The term “olefins” is supposedly derived from the French expression “gaz oléfiant” (oil-forming gas), which was intended for ethene because the reaction of ethene and chlorine produces “oily” 1,2-dichloroethane .
