background

Bizarre Love Triangle was written by the band members of New Order. According to bassist Peter Hook , more attention was paid to the sound than the lyrics in writing the song. In an interview, Hook explained that when recording Brotherhood , the band decided to record the two sides of the album as two different parts with a distinct style: "The first side contains the quiet, rocking acoustic songs, and the second side the more electronic songs" . The band wanted to start the second side with a memorable song that dictates the direction of the album. After originally choosing a different song, the band decided on Bizarre Love Triangle shortly before release .

Similar to Blue Monday , in Bizarre Love Triangle the name of the song does not even appear in the text. According to Peter Hook, New Order records the title names through various media such as books, television and the like, and writes down good-sounding names for later use as the song title.

Musical and content

Bizarre Love Triangle is a new wave / synth pop song, which combines classic soul melodies and gospel lyrics with an electronic hookline and an 80s computer sound . The song is written in B flat major and has a tempo of 116 beats per minute . The various versions of the song begin differently but are then respectively with the typical for the song, 13 notes comprehensive drum intro interrupted before the catchy melody and the text begins. After the verse the melody of the song changes and gets higher before it merges into the chorus . Of Bizarre Love Triangle , there are many different versions of New Order, including the album version with a length of 4:20 minutes, the 7 "single version with a length of 3:44 minutes, which is usually played on the radio , the 12 ″ remix version with a duration of over six minutes and the 1994 version with a duration of 3:54 minutes.

Lyrically, Bizarre Love Triangle is divided into two stanzas , each ending with the chorus . In terms of content, the song vaguely describes different feelings, but does not give a detailed story.

"Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You'll say the words that I can't say."

- Refrain, original excerpt

"Every time I see you fall,
I get on my knees and pray.
I wait for the final moment
when you say the words I can't pronounce."

- Refrain, German translation

Commercial win

In terms of charts, Bizarre Love Triangle could not build on the success of Blue Monday . In the British singles charts , the song rose to number 56 on November 15, 1986. In the following chart week it fell to 66th place, which was the last chart placement. The song couldn't get into the Billboard Hot 100 after it was released, but reached number 8 in the Hot dance Charts . It was not until the release of a new remix in 1994 as part of the album release of The Best of New Order that the song reached number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bizarre Love Triangle missed the single charts in German-speaking countries . In Australia the song rose to number 5 in the local single charts.
