Apoptygma Berzerk (short forms: APB, APOP) is a Norwegian music project that was founded in Sarpsborg in 1989 by Stephan L. Groth and Jon Erik Martinsen.

history

Jonas Groth, Amphi Festival (2017)

Since Martinsen left shortly after the band was founded, Apoptygma Berzerk was initially a solo project.

Only cover versions can be heard on the album Sonic Diary . The album is available as a normal version and as a limited double album with nine remixes.

On October 12, 2007 (except APBL98) all older APB albums were re -released in a Remastered Edition .

At the beginning of 2009 Apoptygma Berzerk released their latest studio album Rocket Science . This album is characterized by a mixture of electronic sounds and rock elements. In terms of content, the album deals with conspiracy theories and media criticism, among other things.

On August 10, 2009, the birthday of singer Stephan Groth, several band members announced that they were separating from Apoptygma Berzerk for personal reasons. According to official information, the separation was amicable. Apoptygma Berzerk remains with Stephan L. Groth as head of the band and new band members for the live performances. In 2009 and 2010 Apoptygma Berzerk toured Europe and the USA. From the end of 2010 to the beginning of 2011, Apoptygma Berzerk was on tour as a support act with Unheilig . To date, the band has sold over 500,000 albums worldwide.

style

The musical spectrum encompasses many aspects of electronic music and ranges from electro to trance and techno elements and is often referred to as future pop ; however, the band also integrates rock elements such as drums and guitars into their sound.

Stephan Groth's work is characterized by numerous remixes and cover versions . Many of these musical influences found their way into the band's music in less obvious forms of samples and quotes. In addition to some reinterpreted hits from the 1980s, the title tune from the Twin Peaks series and a guitar solo by Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain were reused on the band's albums.
