The first Amphitheater took place in the eponymous amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen , since 2006 the Tanzbrunnen in Cologne has been the venue for the two-day festival, which moved to the Lanxess Arena in Cologne in 2015 , but moved back in 2016. On two days there will be performances on a total of three stages.

For the ninth Amphi Festival, the opening event Call the ship to port was offered for the first time , in which 1,111 visitors took part in a Rhine cruise with the MS Rheinenergie on the Friday before the start of the festival , and there, in addition to a piano concert under the motto Classics & Depeche , exclusive concerts by Welle: Erdball and Covenant .

In 2014, the tenth Amphi Festival took place for the last time on the Tanzbrunnen site, with 16,000 visitors per festival day, the tenth Amphi Festival was sold out for the fifth time in a row. After the festival, the organizer announced that they would move to the Lanxess Arena in 2015. In addition to capacity reasons, the main reasons for the move were the climate and the unsatisfactory acoustics in the State House. Due to the Zeljko storm , the outdoor area at the premiere in Cologne had to be closed on the first day of the festival, and bands had to be relocated to the Lanxess Arena or canceled entirely. On March 3, 2016, the organizer announced that the Amphi Festival 2016 will return to the grounds of the Tanzbrunnen. With the return to the Tanzbrunnen , which has lost a stage with the State House, the number of tickets had to be reduced from 16,000 to 12,000. The third festival stage, next to the open-air and indoor stage, has found its place for the first time on the party catamaran MS Rheinenergie .
