Cinema Strange is a gothic punk / death rock band from California , founded in 1994 by the brothers Daniel and Michael Ribiat. They see their roots in traditional Gothic Rock of the 1980s, with bands such as the Virgin Prunes or the Sex Gang Children . The band also sees itself influenced by London After Midnight and the plaintive tones of Sopor Aeternus .

After a few changes, the current membership structure was consolidated in 1998, with Lanthier as the singer. For years they were considered an insider tip of the Gothic scene on the American west coast, until they were given the opportunity in 2000 by the German record label Trisol to release their records in large numbers in the old world. Since then, the main focus of the group has therefore been on Europe. In September 2000, Cinema Strange played its first European concert in the incident in Bochum .

Musical classification and style

The music of Cinema Strange is mainly assigned to death rock and gothic punk . The music is often played hectically, the bass game corresponds, according to MetalStorm.net, to a gloomy grooving walking bass , which, in addition to the brightly played electric guitar, is an equal to dominant instrument. The melody is described as "morbid", while the singing is described as tearful. The singing in particular was compared to that of Andi Sexgang (Sex Gang Children). The keyboard is sometimes ascribed a dominant role. A stylistic similarity to Sopor Aeternus is ascribed to keyboard playing and singing in particular. The drums are also played very tom-tom- heavy according to the ideals and ideas of early Gothic Punk and almost completely dispense with the use of cymbals, as was already practiced by early representatives of Gothic Punk such as Siouxsie and the Banshees .

The self-titled first studio album was mostly located in the death rock revival of Gothic punk. In the music magazine Legacy , the band's debut, with comparisons to Bauhaus , Siouxsie and the Banshees, Christian Death and London After Midnight, was used as a typical example of representatives of the American Gothic revival.

From the second album onwards, songs, the varieties of Dark Wave , under the influence of art music , appear. The Astonished Eyes of Evening was critically described as "abysmal and bizarre," while the "crazy atmosphere" would divide the audience. Despite this advancement, Cinema Strange did not move away from death rock and goth punk. With the second album, elements, influences and sometimes entire pieces in the dark wave became an expansion of the band's musical spectrum. On The Astonished Eyes of the Evening the influences of the Dark Wave and the pieces played in this genre slightly outweigh (6 // 10).

“The greatest developments were definitely in the musical-compositional area. We have deviated a little from our earlier mentality of wanting to write catchy death rock anthems. We now feel a greater need to express ourselves more explicitly and in more detail, which in the case of the new album is particularly noticeable in the songwriting. "

- Lucas Lanthier.

The songs on the second album are often instrumental, with an acoustic guitar , an accordion and a piano and are sung in such a theatrical way with a tearful voice that it creates a dark and creepy atmosphere. Typical death rock and gothic punk are also present on this album, but due to the number (4/10) of songs in Gothic punk and death rock, this does not reflect the main style of the album, which reflects the influence of artists from the Environment of the Batcave as Andi Sexgang make clear, who already served the chanson as a music style with publications like Dead Metal .

With the third work Quatorze Exemples Authentiques Du Triomphe De LA Musique Décorative , the music turns back more to modern death rock and gothic punk. The mixture of Dark Wave and Death-Rock, Gothic Punk is more balanced, and in contrast to its predecessor, Death-Rock and Gothic Punk outweighs slightly (7/13). The fact that the focus is back on the original style is also noticeable through the songwriting, and so the lyrical focus is placed on the songs located in goth punk and death rock. The band placed sound games and elegiac experimentation in the two instrumental pieces in the middle and in the album's intro, which lasts only a few seconds. Only one song at the end of the album is accompanied by vocals. Lyrically and thematically remained largely unchanged. Quatorze Exemples Authentiques Du Triomphe De LA Musique Décorative is described as a more dynamic album. The development is particularly attributed to the addition of a real drummer.

The group's lyrics deal with all sorts of bizarre stories and supernatural or fantastic characters. This is also reflected in the laborious live performances of the formation. The increasing popularity of the group in Europe led Cinema Strange to the big festivals of the black scene .
