Bauhaus was a British dark wave / rock band who, together with musicians such as Joy Division , Siouxsie and the Banshees , The Cure and David Bowie, laid the foundation for Gothic Rock . The band combined a progressive, experimental style of music with melancholy and mystical lyrics and an appearance in dark clothes with dark make-up.

history

First phase (1978–1983)

The band was founded in 1978 in Northampton, England by four art students Peter Murphy , Daniel Ash , David J and Kevin Haskins. It was named after the Bauhaus art and design school founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919 (the group was originally called "Bauhaus 1919"). The group also used the Bauhaus logo designed by Oskar Schlemmer on its publications and merchandising items . First, Daniel Ash had the band's concerts recorded and sent the tapes to various record companies in America. Demotapes were later sent to a few labels around London until they were signed to independent label Small Wonder Records in 1979 .

With their debut single Bela Lugosi's Dead , they suddenly became famous in the British post-punk subculture. The single got very positive reviews from various music magazines such as Sounds . Furthermore, the single was at the top of the British independent charts for over two years.

In January 1980 they were invited to a BBC radio session by John Peel , which they were able to increase the level of awareness again.

After this session, the band was signed to the independent label 4AD , founded in 1979 . First three more singles were released, including a cover version of Telegram Sam by the British band T. Rex . At the end of the year, the debut album In the Flat Field was finally released . The album made it into the top 100 of the UK sales charts.

Due to the increasing popularity, the musicians switched to the Beggars Banquet Records label . In 1981 the band had further chart successes in Great Britain with the album Mask and the singles Kick in the Eye and The Passion of Lovers . The next year, Bauhaus released a cover version of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust , with which they appeared on Top of the Pops in 1982 . With this performance the album The Sky's Gone Out made it into the British Top 10.

For the movie lust (The Hunger) the song was Bela Lugosi's Dead used as an opener. The first shot was to see the band playing in a discotheque. During the recording of the album Burning From The Inside, Peter Murphy fell ill with pneumonia , which caused the recordings to drag on.

After his recovery, the first single She's in Parties was released, with which the band performed again on Top of the Pops . The following tour has been announced by Daniel Ash that this will be the final tour. Because of the increasing differences between the band members, they decided to go their separate ways. At the last concert at Hammersmith Palace, David J. called Rest In Peace into the audience before the band left the stage.

After the release of Burning from the Inside , the band was officially disbanded.

Intermediate period (1984-2004)

Peter Murphy initially founded the music project Dalis Car together with Mick Karn , but it was dissolved after an album. He later decided to pursue a solo career. The other band members initially joined together under the name Tones On Tail and finally as a fast reunion as Love and Rockets . Furthermore, some compilations and live recordings of the band were released.

Between 1985 and 1990, the albums Mask , The Skies Gone Out and 1979-1983 Vol. 1 in Great Britain were awarded a silver record for 60,000 units sold each.

In 1998 the musicians reunited and started a tour around the world with over 50 concerts. At this time the best-of record Crackle was released. The final concert in New York was videotaped and broadcast on television. This recording was later available on DVD. At the beginning of 1999 the band announced that they would go their separate ways again.

Second phase (2005-2008)

In autumn 2005 there was another reunification. In the next few years, Bauhaus was again on tour in large parts of the world. Cover versions of other bands such as Joy Division were increasingly recorded in the live program .

On March 3, 2008, a new album called Go Away White was released on the Cooking Vinyl label . The original line-up of the album was recorded within 18 days at the Zircon Skye studio in Ojai . According to the information on the label's website, all tracks were recorded live in the studio and the first take was taken as the final version. Furthermore, it is announced there that this album will be the last, and the band members see it as "posthumous swan song ". Songs like Saved & The Dog's a Vapor tie in seamlessly with the early Goth-Rock pieces with their dark, experimental and melancholic sound. Nevertheless, Go Away White also contains songs with "lighter" structures which, despite the experimental sound, can be roughly assigned to the alternative rock environment. The reason for the predominantly bright and positive songs was that Bauhaus wanted to stop with a positive statement. In 2008, the band finally broke up, according to Peter Murphy. In 2018, founding members Peter Murphy and David J announced a gig for the band's 40th anniversary. Kevin Haskins also published the illustrated book "Bauhaus - Undead. The Visual History and Legacy of Bauhaus".

Style and perception

The band named Siouxsie and the Banshees , Joy Division and David Bowie as influences.

Bauhaus is considered one of the most influential Gothic Rock bands . In the Flat Field is considered by many critics to be the first album in this genre. The singer Peter Murphy in particular became the idol of European Gothic (culture) of the 1980s and served James O'Barr as a model for the protagonist of his comic The Crow .
