Hammersmith is a district of London . It belongs to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and is located on the north bank of the Thames , about eight kilometers west of Charing Cross . In the north the district borders on Shepherd's Bush , in the east on Kensington , in the south on Fulham and in the west on Chiswick .
traffic
Hammersmith is a major transportation hub in west London where the main A4 (also known as the Great West Road ) intersects with several other major roads. The crossing point is designed in the form of a roundabout with a diameter of almost 200 meters. In the middle there is a bus station and Hammersmith station of the London Underground ( Piccadilly Line and District Line ). The terminus of the Hammersmith & City Line and the Circle Line can be found on the northwest corner of the roundabout. The nearby Hammersmith Bridge crosses the Thames.
Economy and culture
The economic center of the district is the Broadway Center , a shopping center in the middle of the roundabout. Another mall, King's Mall , is a little further west on King Street. This street is lined with shops on both sides for more than half a kilometer. The area to the east of the roundabout is characterized by several high-rise office buildings that are home to branches of several international companies. Hammersmith is also known as a cultural center. The Hammersmith Apollo (former name: Hammersmith Odeon) is a renowned concert and event venue. Also on King Street is Posk , the center of the Polish community in London.
