Hilary James Wedgwood Benn (born November 26, 1953 in Hammersmith , London ) is a British Labor Party politician and former minister. Since 1999 he is a deputy of the constituency Leeds Central in the House of Commons ( House of Commons ) .

Life

Hilary Benn is the son of former politician Tony Benn . He has been a member of the British Parliament since 1999. His constituency is central Leeds . From 2003 to 2007 Benn was also Minister for International Development in Tony Blair's cabinet . From 2007 to 2010 he was Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Areas in Gordon Brown's cabinet .

After the party had fallen into opposition, he was Group President, the shadow cabinet of Ed Miliband on. After the election of Jeremy Corbyn as party chairman, Benn was given the post of Shadow Foreign Secretary. After a vote of no confidence in Corbyn was announced in the wake of the EU referendum and Benn had asked the other members of the shadow cabinet to resign in the event that Corbyn ignored the result of the vote, he was removed from this internal party post on June 25, 2016.

Benn has been chairing the Exiting the European Union Committee , the so-called Brexit Committee , since October 2016 .

Benn is married and has four children.

Benn Act

Hilary Benn published the text of an intergroup bill on September 2nd. The main purpose of the law, which has now been passed, is to prevent a no-deal Brexit by the Johnson administration without parliamentary participation.

The law passed is entitled European Union (Withdrawal) (No. 2) Act 2019 , it is often referred to briefly as the Benn Act .

The law also sets a new date for the exit, January 31, 2020, which the Prime Minister may be bound by. The vote on it revealed that Johnson had no parliamentary support for his course.
