John Matthew Patrick Hutton, Baron Hutton of Furness (born May 6, 1955 in London ) is a British politician ( Labor ). From 2005 to 2007 he was Minister for Labor and Pensions in Tony Blair's cabinet , from 2007 to 2008 Secretary of Commerce and Industry, and from 2008 to 2009 Secretary of Defense under Gordon Brown .

Life

John Hutton attended Westcliff Boys' High School and Magdalen College at the University of Oxford . Prior to his political career, he taught law at the University of Northumbria .

His political career began with failure in the 1987 elections, when Hutton tried in vain for the seat of the constituency of Penrith and the Border . The elections to the European Parliament in 1989 for the constituency of Cumbria and North Lancashire were equally unsuccessful .

From 1992 to 2010 he was MP for the Labor Party in the House of Commons for the constituency of Barrow and Furness in the county of Cumbria . He was able to recapture this traditional Labor constituency for Labor from the Conservative MP Cecil Simon Franks, who represented this constituency from 1983 to 1992.

In 1998 he joined the Ministry of Health. In 2001 he became a member of the Privy Council (Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Council). In 2005 he became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister of the Cabinet Office in the cabinet reshuffle that followed the elections , replacing Alan Milbun. From November 2005 to June 2007 he was Minister of Health. On June 28, 2007, Hutton was appointed Secretary of Commerce and Industry by the new Prime Minister Gordon Brown .

On June 27, 2010, Hutton was raised to the nobility as a Life Peer with the title Baron Hutton of Furness , of Aldingham in the County of Cumbria. He was introduced to the House of Lords on July 1, 2010.
