Peter Gerald Hain, Hain Baron (* 16th February 1950 in Nairobi , Kenya ) is a British politician of the Labor Party . Hain was a member of the House of Commons from 1991 to 2015 and was a member of the Cabinet under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in various offices. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 2015 .

Youth and education

Peter Hain is the son of South African parents who had to leave the country because of their commitment against apartheid and emigrated to London. He attended the Emanuel School in London , after which he studied at Queen Mary and Westfield College at the University of London and at the University of Sussex .

Political career

Hain was first a member of the Liberal Party , where he was elected chairman of the party's youth organization . But in 1977, Hain joined the Labor Party and founded the Anti-Nazi League (ANL) . In 1991, Hain was elected to the House of Commons . From 1995 it was his job to act as a whip . From 1999 to 2001 he was Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and from 2001 to 2002 Minister of State for Europe. From 2002 to 2008, Hain was Minister for Wales. In addition, he was Lord Seal Keeper and majority leader in the House of Commons from 2003 to 2005 . He was then Minister for Northern Ireland from 2005 to 2007 and Minister for Labor and Pensions from 2007 to 2008. In January 2008, he resigned on suspicion of being involved in a donation scandal. In 2009, however, he was again Minister for Wales and remained so until 2010. On March 30, 2015, Hain resigned from the House of Commons. On October 22, 2015, he was named a Life Peer with the title Baron Hain , of Neath in the County of West Glamorgan. This also made him a member of the House of Lords.

On December 14, 2015, in an interview with the BBC, Hain spoke out in favor of the United Kingdom remaining in the European Union . An exit (“ Brexit ”) would hit Wales particularly hard economically.
