Harriet Harman (* the 30th July 1950 in Marylebone , London ) is a British politician of the Labor Party .

Life

After graduating from St Paul's Girls' School , Harman studied political science at the University of York and graduated with a bachelor's degree . After completing her studies, Harman worked for the National Council for Civil Liberties from 1978 to 1982 .

Since 1982, Harman MPs in the House of Commons for the electoral district of Camberwell and Peckham . From June 24, 2007 she was Deputy Leader of the Labor Party. June 28, 2007 to May 11, 2010 she was Lord Privy Seal ( Lord Privy Seal ), chairman of the government faction in the House of Commons ( Leader of the House of Commons ) and Minister for Women and Equality . After the resignation of Gordon Brown on May 11, 2010 until the election of Ed Miliband on September 25, 2010 and again after Miliband's resignation on May 8, 2015, Harman acted as Acting Leader of the Labor Party and thus as opposition leader. On the same day as Miliband, she announced her resignation as Deputy Leader , but only with effect for the election of a new party leadership. With the election of Jeremy Corbyn as party chairman and Tom Watson as his deputy on September 12, 2015, she left office accordingly.

In the election for Speaker of the House of Commons 2019 , she unsuccessfully applied to succeed the speaker John Bercow, who resigned in October 2019 . She is also known as the Mother of the House due to her long service in the House of Commons - making her the longest serving female MP. Father of the House is the MP Kenneth Clarke .

Harman has been married to Jack Dromey since 1982 . The family has three children.
