John Reid (* 8. May 1947 in Bellshill , Lanarkshire , Scotland ) is a British politician of the Labor Party , who not only repeatedly minister was, but, since 2007, Chairman of the football club Celtic Glasgow is.

biography

After attending St. Patrick's High School in Coatbridge , he studied at The Open University before completing a degree in history at the University of Stirling , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA History). He then completed a postgraduate degree in economic history at the University of Stirling with a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) .

Reid, who was initially involved in the British Communist Party , later became a member of the Labor Party's research department and was most recently an advisor to the then party chairman Neil Kinnock from 1983 to 1985 .

In 1987 he was himself as a candidate of the Labor Party for the first time as a deputy in the lower house ( House of Commons ) selected and represented in this first ten years the constituency Motherwell North . He was then a Member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill between 1997 and 2005 and represented the constituency of Airdrie and Shotts in the House of Commons from 2005 to 2010 .

After the Labor Party won the general election on May 1, 1997 , he became Minister of State for the Armed Forces , before he was Minister of State for Transport from 1998 to 1999. After another government reshuffle, he was first appointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1999 as Minister for Scotland and was subsequently Minister for Northern Ireland from 25 January 2001 to 24 October 2002 .

Afterwards he was initially a minister without portfolio , before he was briefly Lord President of the Council in 2003 and at the same time leader of the majority faction of the Labor Party in the lower house ( Leader of the House of Commons ). He was also from 2002 to 2003 executive chairman of the Labor Party ( Labor Party Chairman ).

After another government reshuffle , he was Minister of Health between 2003 and 2005 and then Minister of Defense in the Blair cabinet. Des Browne succeeded him as Secretary of Defense .

Most recently, John Reid 2006 Minister of the Interior ( Home Secretary ) and held this position until the end of the term of office of Tony Blair in June of 2007.

Since 2007 he has been chairman of the Celtic Glasgow football club.

In the general election on May 6, 2010 , he did not run for the lower house again and was replaced in the election as a member of his previous colleague Pamela Nash , who was the youngest member of the lower house ( Baby of the House ) at that time . After retiring from the House, he was himself in May 2010 as a life peer with the title Baron Reid of Cardowan , of Stepps in Lanarkshire, in the peerage collected and is therefore ever since a member of the upper house ( House of Lords ) .
