Clare Short
Clare Short (born February 15, 1946 in Birmingham , England ) is a British politician and suffragette .
biography
After attending school, she graduated from the University of Leeds .
Clare Short began her political career as a candidate of the Labor Party in 1983 with the election of deputies of the lower house and represents since the constituency of Birmingham Ladywood . Later she was a member of the shadow cabinet of the 1983-1992 incumbent Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock .
As a member of parliament, she drew attention to herself when she tried to prevent the publication of the so-called Page Three girls in newspapers such as " The Sun ", " Daily Mirror " and " Daily Star " through the so-called Page Three Bill . In doing so, she tried less to ban the depiction of naked women, but rather defined a newspaper before the law as a product that does not depict naked or half-naked men or women. The law would have separated the British tabloid media from their legally significant status as newspapers. She received 3,000 letters supporting her cause while Sun and other tabloids opposed the scheme. Ultimately, it failed due to a lack of political support within its own ranks.
After the Labor Party's victory in the general election in 1997 , Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed her as Secretary of State for International Development in his government. One of her closest associates during this time was her Parliamentary Private Secretary, Dennis Turner .
In 2000, she was among several prominent Labor members for a donation of 100,000 pounds sterling by Richard Desmond raised the question whether the party money from a porn should adopt newspaper publisher.
On May 12, 2003 , she resigned in protest against the Iraq war and became one of Blair's harshest critics. In February 2004 she attracted renewed attention when she stated that the employee United Nations , including UN Secretary General Kofi Annan , the British Secret Service ( Secret Intelligence Service were tapped, MI6). Furthermore, Short has often attracted attention through her statements critical of Israel , for example she repeatedly referred to Israel as an “ apartheid regime” and called for a trade boycott of Israeli goods because of the Israeli settlement policy. In 2007, she claimed that Israel was undermining the international community's efforts against global warming because the Middle East conflict had diverted the world's attention from the issue.
