Alistair Maclean Darling Baron Darling of Roulanish (* 28. November 1953 in London ) is a British politician of the Labor Party and was from 2007 to 2010 Chancellor of the Exchequer in the government of Gordon Brown .

Alistair Maclean Darling, Baron Darling of Roulanish, the son of a civil engineer, is of Scottish descent. He attended school in Kirkcaldy and Musselburgh and studied law at the University of Aberdeen ( LL.B ). He then worked as a lawyer.

From 1987 he was a member of the British House of Commons for the constituency of Edinburgh South West (formerly Edinburgh Central). Darling held various cabinet positions from 1997 (including Minister for Trade and Industry) and has been a member of the Privy Council since then .

In the run-up to the 2014 Scottish independence referendum , Darling campaigned for Scotland to remain in the UK with the Better Together campaign. At the general election in 2015 Darling has not raced for more. As a successor, his party colleague Ricky Henderson could not prevail against the SNP candidate Joanna Cherry in his constituency of Edinburgh South West .

On December 1, 2015, Darling was elevated to a Life Peer title, Baron Darling of Roulanish , of Great Bernera in the County of Ross and Cromarty . This also made him a member of the House of Lords .

On December 9, 2015, it was announced that Darling would become a member of the board of directors of Bank Morgan Stanley in January 2016 .
