Yvette Cooper (born March 20, 1969 in Inverness , Scotland ) is a British politician and was Minister of the Department for Work and Pensions in the Brown government from June 5, 2009 to 2010 .

Life

After finishing school, Cooper studied at Balliol College , Oxford, and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy & Economics . She then studied under the Kennedy Scholarship at Harvard University and achieved her master's degree . After graduating in 1990, Cooper got a job with the politician John Smith . As a political advisor, Cooper was also active for Bill Clinton in 1992 in his election campaign and then for the British MP Harriet Harman . In 1995 Cooper got a job as a business correspondent for the British newspaper The Independent .

As a member of the Labor Party, Cooper succeeded in 1997 for the first time as a member of the British House of Commons for the constituency of Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley . She was re-elected in 2001, 2005, 2010 and 2015. In the shadow cabinet of Ed Miliband Cooper Shadow Home Secretary was (Shadow Home Secretary). After the election of Jeremy Corbyn as party chairman in September 2015, Cooper resigned from that position. Cooper is now to lead a working group on the refugee crisis . Andy Burnham is the new Shadow Secretary of the Interior .

Cooper has been married to Edward Balls since January 10, 1998. The couple has three children.
