David Anthony Laws (born November 30, 1965 in Farnham ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats party (LibDems) and a former investment banker .

Laws is a member of the UK House of Commons for the constituency of Yeovil . After the 2010 election , Laws became a member of the Cameron I cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury . He only held this post from May 12 to May 29, 2010. He was forced to resign after the Daily Telegraph reported that Laws had claimed his significant other's home costs as his own expense and had been reimbursed as expenses.

His successor in office was party friend Danny Alexander .

The offer of Nick Clegg after this defeat by the inclusion in the Dissolution Honors List with a life peerage title for a seat in the upper house of parliament was rejected by Laws.
