John Flasby Lawrance Whittingdale PC OBE (born October 16, 1959 ) is a British Conservative Party politician and has been a member of the British Parliament since 1992 . From May 2015 to July 2016 he served as the UK Minister for Culture, Media and Sport.

Whittingdale attended Winchester College after Sandroyd School and then studied at University College London . Politically active at a young age, he was elected to the British Parliament for the first time in 1992. During Tony Blair's reign , he was the shadow secretary of state for culture, media and sport. From 2005 - this year he was re-elected to parliament in the constituency of Maldon and East Chelmsford - until 2015 he was chairman of this parliamentary committee and in this role played a leading role in the parliamentary investigation into the News International scandal . He became known, among other things, when he forced the media mogul Rupert Murdoch through an official summons to make a statement before his committee of inquiry.

His appointment as Minister for Culture, Media and Sport was welcomed as Whittingdale is recognized as a seasoned media expert. At the same time, this personnel decision was seen as a "declaration of war on the BBC ", as Whittingdale had made a name for itself in the past as a sharp critic of license fees. As part of the cabinet reshuffle associated with the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and the assumption of office by his successor Theresa May , Whittingdale left his ministerial post on July 14, 2016. This was taken over on the same day by Karen Bradley , also MP of the Conservative Party.

John Wittingdale was married to nurse Ancilla Murfitt but has since divorced. First is the father of two children.
