Stephen Crabb (born January 20, 1973 in Inverness , Scotland ) is a British Conservative Party politician . He has been a member of the House of Commons since 2005 and has served as UK Secretary of Labor and Pensions since March 2016. Before that, he was Parliamentary Secretary of the Conservative Group ( Government Whip ) and Minister for Wales .

Life

Crabb was born in Inverness, Scotland to Scottish Welsh parents but grew up in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He and his two brothers were raised in a council flat by his single mother after she divorced his abusive father.

These early experiences, he said, influenced his views on welfare. “What gives me the most strength is the way my mother overcame her crisis when she became dependent on welfare . She started with a few hours of work during the week and then worked more and more. When she completed further training on her own, she got a full-time job, was able to buy a car and became financially independent. "

Education and Early Career

He studied political science at the University of Bristol and received his bachelor's degree in politics in 1995.

As a student, Crabb worked on construction work in various locations in England and Wales during his summer vacation. He met his current wife, Béatrice, while studying in Bristol.

After studying in Bristol, Crabb studied French at the Open University and an MBA from the London Business School . He began his career with the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services as a part-time youth worker in south London. From 1995 to 1996 Crabb did an internship with the advocacy group “Christian Action Research and Education”.

In 1998, Crabb began working for the London Chamber of Commerce , the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was also an election observer in Bosnia and Herzegovina that same year . In 2002 he became a marketing consultant .

Political career

elections

Crabb was elected MP in his home constituency, Preseli Pembrokeshire, in the 2005 British general election. He delivered his inaugural address on May 25, 2005.

In the 2010 British general election , Crabb was re-elected with a majority of 42.79%. He was also re-elected with 40.4% in the 2015 elections.

Minister for Wales

In July 2014, Crabb was appointed Secretary of State for Wales , the Minister for Wales. One of his first acts as Secretary of State for Wales was to swap his taxpayer-funded car for public transport. Crabb also became Minister for Wales after the 2015 elections. During his tenure as Minister for Wales he was an avowed supporter of Iain Duncan Smith's social policy reforms: "We cannot be petty about social reforms in places like Wales - it is evidently a place that needs it."

Minister of Labor and Pensions

On March 19, 2016, Crabb replaced Iain Duncan Smith as Minister of Labor and Pensions after his unexpected resignation. Crabb has been the first conservative beard to become cabinet minister since 1905.

Crabb has spoken out in advance for a reform of social assistance: “It should be in the interests of all parties to reduce social assistance expenditure. That should be our common goal, because it means that fewer people become dependent, fewer people are unemployed and there are therefore fewer people who need state support. "

Candidate for party leadership and prime ministerial office

After David Cameron , Prime Minister and Chairman of the Conservative Party, announced his resignation in September 2016 following the decision by British voters to leave the European Union , Crabb announced his candidacy for his successor in June 2016. His competitors are Interior Minister Theresa May , Justice Minister Michael Gove , Secretary of State for Energy Andrea Leadsom and former Defense Minister Liam Fox . After getting only 34 of 329 votes in the first round of the primaries on July 5th, he withdrew his application and announced that he would support May.

Expense scandal 2009

During the 2009 expense scandal, it emerged that Crabb was claiming £ 8,049 for the renovation of his London apartment, including £ 500 for a down comforter and TV cabinet. At the time he said, “I never received any expenses for things like plasma televisions, even though the law allowed it. My expenses were always within the limits of the law. "

Connections to CARE

Crabb has connections to "Christian Action Research and Education", a Christian interest group , with which he did an internship before starting his political career. CARE labeled homosexual people as "sexually ill" and lobbyed against the introduction of LGBT rights in Great Britain. However, Crabb distanced himself from these views in 2014, making it clear that he did not see homosexuality as a disease.

Private life

His marriage to the French woman Béatrite Monnier resulted in two children.

He is vice-captain of the Commons and Lords RFC rugby team and has taken part in the London Marathon 3 times . He has been playing the guitar since his youth. He is a practicing Christian and has made speeches at Conservative Christian Fellowship meetings.
