Liam Fox (* 22. September 1961 in East Kilbride , South Lanarkshire , Scotland ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party . From July 2016 to July 2019 he held the post of Minister for International Trade in Cabinets May I and II .

Family, education and work

Liam Fox comes from a Catholic family. The son of a teacher studied medicine at the University of Glasgow after attending St. Bride's High School Kilbride , graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (as MB ChB). He then worked as a general practitioner .

His political career began when he was elected member of the House of Commons in the 1992 general election, in which he has since represented the constituency of Woodspring .

Between 2003 and 2005 he was co-chairman ( chairman ) of the Conservative Party with Maurice Saatchi . Fox, who is considered a Eurosceptic , was also health minister from 1999 to 2003 and foreign minister in 2005 in the shadow cabinet of his party and co-founder of the American- British think tank "Atlantic Bridge".

Fox was Secretary of Defense in David Cameron's cabinet since May 11, 2010 . On October 14, 2011, he resigned from this post after he was criticized for mixing private and professional contacts. On several business trips he had had a close friend with him who worked as a lobbyist for the arms industry .

In an interview with the BBC on December 20, 2015, Fox stated that he would vote for the UK to leave the European Union in a future referendum . The goal of a political union in Europe is not in the interests of Great Britain. After the supporters of the EU exit were victorious in the referendum and David Cameron announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Conservative Party in September 2016, Fox announced his candidacy for his successor in June 2016. His rivals were Home Secretary Theresa May , Justice Secretary Michael Gove , Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom, and Labor and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb . Fox was eliminated in the first round of the primaries with just 16 of 329 votes. He then declared that he wanted to support Theresa May in the other upcoming election rounds. After Theresa May was appointed Prime Minister, Fox was appointed Minister for International Trade. After Boris Johnson took office as Prime Minister on July 24, 2019 , he announced his resignation.
