Eric Pickles Jack, Baron Pickles (* 20th April 1952 in Keighley , West Yorkshire , England ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party . From May 2010 to May 2015 he was Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government .

biography

After attending Greenhead Grammar School , he studied at Leeds Polytechnic and then became an employment practice consultant. After he was from 1980 to 1981 Chairman of the National Youth of the Conservative Party, he was from 1982 to 1990 a member of the Regional Health Authority of Yorkshire ( Yorkshire Regional Health Authority ). In addition, he was active from 1982 to 1987 as co-chair of the National Joint Committee against Racism .

He began his political career as a member of the City of Bradford City Council , of which he was chairman from 1988 to 1990. From 1990 to 1992 he was editor of the Conservative Newsline for local government .

In the elections in April 1992 , he was a candidate of the Conservative Party for the first time a member of the lower house ( House of Commons ) selected and represented by 2017 the constituency Brentwood and Ongar .

Between 1994 and 1997 he was deputy to party chairmen Jeremy Hanley and Brian Mawhinney , before becoming spokesman for social security for the Conservative parliamentary group in the lower house in August 1998 .

In September 2001 he was appointed to his party's shadow cabinet for the first time , where he was initially responsible for transport and for London and then in June 2002 for local government. From 2005 to 2007 he was again deputy to the party chairman Francis Maude .

Between June 2007 and January 2009 he served as party leader of the Conservatives and then "shadow minister" for municipalities and local administration until May 2010. After the Conservative Party's victory in the 2010 general election , he was appointed minister on May 12, 2010 by Prime Minister David Cameron appointed to its first cabinet for municipalities and local administration . In this role he is particularly committed to reducing expenditure and tasks in the public sector. In addition, he criticized the creation of “dummy positions” in local government at an early stage.

In 2015 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor .

Sir Eric Pickles did not run in the general election in June 2017 . His successor for the constituency of Brentwood and Ongar was Alex Burghart . On June 18, 2018, as Baron Pickles , of Brentwood and Ongar in the County of Essex, he was promoted to Life Peer and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .
