Grant Shapps
Grant V. Shapps (born September 14, 1968 in Watford , Hertfordshire ) is a British politician and General Secretary (Chairman) of the Conservative Party . He has been a MP for the Welwyn Hatfield constituency since the 2005 general election.
Shapps has been a member of the Privy Council since June 2010 . On September 4, he replaced Sayeeda Warsi as Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party and was admitted to the Cameron I cabinet as Minister without Portfolio. His salary is paid by the party. Since July 24, 2019, he has been British Transport Minister in Boris Johnson's cabinet .
Family and youth
Shapps was born into a British Jewish family. He attended Yorke Mead Primary School, Watford Grammar School for Boys, followed by Cassio College . He later took an economics and finance course at the Manchester Polytechnic . In 1989 Shapps had a car accident in Kansas that put him in a coma for a week.
Grant Shapps married Belinda Goldstone in 1997, with whom he has three children.
Political career
Parliamentary candidacy
Shapps ran unsuccessfully for the constituency of North Southwark and Bermondsey for the 1997 general election .
Member of Parliament
With his election as MP for Welwyn and Hetfield, he took over the seat of Parliament from Labor MP and Minister of Public Health , Melanie Johnson. He was re-elected in 2010 with a majority of 57 percent. He was re-elected in the 2015 general election.
Minister of State for Housing and Local Government
Shapps headed the working group that developed the “No Second Night Out” campaign to prevent homelessness. In 2012, Shapps released the StreetLink smartphone app , which enables the public to help the homeless, for example by displaying blackboard facilities .
Conservative Party Chairman
In November 2012, Shapps hired the Australian strategist Lynton Crosby to organize the government's re-election campaign. Shapps defended the bedroom tax by stating that his children would also share a room.
