Robert James Buckland QC (born September 22, 1968 in Llanelli , Wales ) is a British Conservative Party politician and barrister . He's since July 2019 Lord Chancellor and Justice Minister ( Secretary of State for Justice ) in the Cabinet Boris Johnson I and II ; in these offices he succeeded David Gauke . From 2014 to 2019 he was Solicitor General for England and Wales before becoming Minister of State for Prisons , an office he held for less than three months.

Buckland studied law at Hatfield College, University of Durham . He completed his studies in 1990. From 1992 to 2010 he practiced as a lawyer , specializing in criminal law. He was a deputy (MP) for Swindon South since the lower house election in 2010 . In the 2016 EU membership referendum , he voted for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union . With his appointment as Solicitor General, he became Crown Attorney in 2014 .
