Christoph Conrad

Christoph Conrad (born August 31, 1956 in Bonn ) is a German historian .

Life

Conrad studied history, Islamic studies and philosophy in Berlin and Bonn , at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and at Brandeis University (Waltham, MA, USA). In 1992 he completed his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin. In 1994/95 he was JF Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University and from 1992 to 1998 research assistant at Jürgen Kocka's chair at the Free University of Berlin. 1998–2001 he was the managing director of the Center for Comparative History in Berlin.

Since 2002 he has been teaching as Professor of Modern History at the University of Geneva . Between 1997 and 2011 he held several guest lectureships at EHESS Paris, the École normal supérieure , Paris (rue d'Ulm) and the Ecole pratique des hautes études (Paris). In 2001/02 he was a Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Wassenaar , and in 2007 a Körber Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Vienna. He was also invited to the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) as a Senior Fellow in 2008/09 , to the International Humanities College “re: work” in 2014/15, and to the Weatherhead Center for 2017 as a visiting scholar International Affairs (Global History Initiative), Harvard University. At the beginning of 2020 the Center d'histoire of Sciences Po Paris appointed him 'professeur invité' for a month.

He is a member of the editorial board of History and Society and the Comité éditorial of the Paris magazine Le Mouvement Social. Since 2018 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Historical Institute in Paris .

Conrad's research interests include the history and theory of historiography, the comparative history of the welfare state, and the history of market and opinion research . In recent years he has been particularly concerned with population history in the 20th and 21st centuries. Century and the topic of global aging .
