from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands is an independent research institute for research in the humanities and social sciences.

history

The NIAS was built in 1970 based on the model of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study and has been operated since 1988 under the direction of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). After the institutes in Princeton and Stanford, the NIAS was the third institute of its kind worldwide and the first in Europe.

The first seat of the NIAS was on the premises of the Del Court van Krimpen Villa in Wassenaar near The Hague . In 2013 the KNAW decided to move the NIAS to Amsterdam. Since September 2016 the new headquarters of the NIAS has been in the old town of Amsterdam.

Fellows

Scientists in particular, but also journalists, writers and artists, can apply for a fellowship at NIAS; a selection committee awards around fifty scholarships to the applications each year. The fellowships last either three, five or ten months. As a rule, half of the fellows from universities and research institutions come from the Netherlands, the other half from abroad. The NIAS also awards topic-based scholarships in which several fellows work together on a common topic for up to five months.
