Justine Greening (2017)

Justine Greening (born April 30, 1969 in Rotherham , South Yorkshire ) is a British politician (non-party, formerly Conservative Party ), was a member of the House of Commons for the Putney constituency from 2005 to 2019 and a member of the Cameron cabinet since October 14, 2011 I , initially as Secretary of State for Transport and since September 2012 as Minister for International Development Cooperation. In Theresa May's government , she was Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities from July 2016 to January 2018 .

Life

After attending Oakwood Comprehensive School, Justine Greening studied economics at the University of Southampton and then worked as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers , GlaxoSmithKline and Centrica .

In the general election on May 5, 2005 , she was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Conservative Party as a member of the House of Commons, where she has since represented the Putney constituency as the successor to Labor Party politician Tony Colman . She was the youngest female MP in the Conservative Tories until Chloe Smith was elected in a by-election in 2009 .

After the Conservative Party won the general election on May 6, 2010 , she became Economic Secretary to the Treasury . When Secretary of Defense Liam Fox was criticized for mixing personal and professional contacts and resigned, she succeeded Transport Secretary Philip Hammond on October 14, 2011 , who in turn succeeded Fox as Secretary of Defense. Justine Greening is currently the fifth female minister, which is seen as a sign that the Conservatives want to win back falling support from female voters. She was succeeded by Chloe Smith as Treasury Secretary.

One of her first tasks as Minister of Transport will be to calm down an internal party “rebellion” by backbenchers against the planned high-speed HS2 system from British Rail . In addition, she will have to agree on a unified political line with Norman Baker . Baker, member of the coalition partner Liberal Democrats , is Parliamentary Undersecretary of State responsible for buses, taxis, pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well as parking systems in the ministry, and is known as a man with his own ideas.

Minister of Education

Justine Greening became Minister of Education in the May cabinet in July 2016 . When the ministerial posts in her cabinet were changed in January 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May Greening tried, according to press reports, to replace her as education minister and transfer her to the Ministry of Labor and Pensions. When her attempt to prevent the transfer had failed, Greening surprisingly announced her resignation on January 8, 2018. On the same day, Damian Hinds was appointed Minister of Education as her successor .

On September 4, 2019, she was expelled from the Conservative Party faction due to her parliamentary opposition to a Brexit without an EU exit agreement. Greening announced in autumn 2019 that it would no longer apply for a seat in parliament in the next general election.

Private

In June 2016, Greening announced that she was living with her life partner in London.
