Antony Head, 1st Viscount Head

Antony (Anthony) Henry Head, 1st Viscount Head , GCMG CBE MC PC (born December 19, 1906 - March 29, 1983 ) was a British brigadier in the British Army and a politician of the Conservative Party .

Life

After attending Eton College , he completed military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and then served in the King's Royal Hussars and Life Guards and was promoted to brigadier during World War II .

Head began his political career when he was a candidate for the Conservative Party in the general election of July 5, 1945, when he was elected to the House of Commons for the first time and represented the constituency of Carshalton until August 1960 .

After the victory of the Conservatives in the general election on October 25, 1951 , he was appointed Minister of War in his cabinet by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and kept this office under Churchill's successor as Prime Minister Anthony Eden . Most recently he was Minister of Defense in the Eden cabinet from October 1956 to January 1957 .

After leaving the House of Commons, he was raised to the hereditary nobility in August 1960 as Viscount Head , of Throope in the County of Wiltshire , and was a member of the House of Lords until his death . At the same time, he took on tasks in the diplomatic service and was initially High Commissioner in Nigeria and then from 1963 to 1966 High Commissioner in Malaysia . After his death he was followed by his eldest son Richard Antony as 2nd Viscount Head .
