British general election 1951
The British General Election of 1951 took place on October 25th, twenty months after the British General Election in 1950 , which the Labor Party won with a narrow majority (315 of 625 seats). Labor called a new election on October 25, 1951 in the hope of winning more seats. Although Labor gained votes, it lost seats due to majority voting. The Conservative Party also gained votes. Although it still lagged behind the Labor Party in terms of votes, it won more seats than it did. The Liberal Party lost more than two thirds of its votes and was only the fourth strongest party behind the National Liberal Party .
Prime Minister Clement Attlee (Labor) was succeeded by the conservative Winston Churchill , who had held the post from 1940–1945.
