A total of 73 seats

The 2014 European Elections in the United Kingdom took place on May 22, 2014 as part of the 2014 European Elections . In this election, 73 of the 751 MEPs in the UK were elected to the European Parliament .

Electoral system

The 73 MPs are elected in 12 constituencies. In each constituency, with the exception of Northern Ireland, proportional representation is used separately . Between three and ten mandates are awarded per constituency. Northern Ireland uses a single transferable voting system .

Constituencies:

Starting position

In the 2009 European elections , the Conservative Party became the strongest party, winning 27 seats (including one seat for Northern Ireland's Ulster Conservatives and Unionists - New Force and an additional seat after the Lisbon Treaty came into force ). The second strongest party was the UK Independence Party (UKIP), which was critical of the EU , while the Labor Party , which was in power at the time, lost its votes. The British National Party (BNP) was the first right-wing extremist party from the United Kingdom to enter the European Parliament.

The MEPs of the Conservatives no longer joined the Group of the European People's Party (EPP) as before , but founded the new Group European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR). During the legislative period there were several party or parliamentary groups, in particular withdrawals from the UKIP.
