A total of 21 seats

The 2014 European elections in Portugal took place on May 25, 2014. It was carried out as part of the EU- wide European elections in 2014 , with 21 of the 751 seats in the European Parliament in Portugal . Compared to the previous legislature, Portugal lost one seat due to the Lisbon Treaty .

Suffrage

The election was based on proportional representation , with the whole of Portugal being a single constituency . The distribution takes place according to the D'Hondt method . There is no explicit threshold clause . However, the seat allocation procedure results in an implicit hurdle of a good 4.5% of the votes that a party has to achieve in order to be allocated a seat.

All citizens with Portuguese citizenship over 18 years of age who had registered in the electoral register of their local authority were entitled to vote. Furthermore, the Portuguese living abroad were also eligible to vote, they could cast their vote in one of the 71 consulates. All citizens of the European Union who live in Portugal and have also registered in the electoral register were also entitled to vote.

Parties

The Tribunal Constitucional (Constitutional Court), which is responsible for admission to the polls in Portugal, has approved a total of 14 parties and two lists for the European elections. Movimento 51 - Associação M51 was not admitted because the association did not provide any evidence of the party structure.
