A total of 22 seats

The European elections in Portugal 2009 took place on June 7, 2009. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2009 , with 22 of the 736 seats in the European Parliament in Portugal . The election took place according to proportional representation without a threshold clause, with the whole of Portugal being considered a single constituency .

In the 2004 European elections , the then still 24 Portuguese seats were split between five parties, namely Partido Socialista (PS, 12 seats), Partido Social Democrata (PSD, 7 seats), Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular (CDS-PP, 2nd Seats), Coligação Democrática Unitária (CDU, 2 seats) and Bloco de Esquerda (BE, 1 seat). In 2009, eight other parties also ran for election. The top candidates from the major parties were Vital Moreira (PS), Paulo Rangel (PSD), Nuno Melo (CDS-PP), Ilda Figueiredo (CDU) and Miguel Portas (BE).

In the polls before the election, PS and PSD were roughly on par, with PS usually having a slight lead. In contrast, the PSD won the elections quite clearly. The turnout was 36.8% and was thus below the European average. In detail, the parties achieved the following results:
