Partido Operário de Unidade Socialista

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Partido Operário de Unidade Socialista (POUS), in English "Workers' Party of Socialist Unity", is a small Portuguese party with a Trotskyist orientation .

The party was founded in 1976, after the Carnation Revolution , by Aires Rodrigues and Carmelinda Pereira. In the period after the revolution there was a strong wave of founding various left parties, including the POUS. In addition to the POUS, the best-known parties from this period are the Partido Socialista and the Partido Comunista Português . The POUS is a member of the IV International from 1993.

Although the party has run in almost all elections since 1976, it has never won a seat. Between 1994 and 1999 the party was renamed Movimento para a Unidade dos Trabalhadores (MUT), in German "Movement for the Union of All Workers"; but even this did not bring any electoral success.

As one of its election goals, the party proclaims to advocate a ban on dismissals.
