Germany
The Union parties (CDU / CSU) became the strongest force with a total of 37.8% of the votes, but suffered significant losses compared to the 1984 European elections (46.0%) and the 1987 federal election (44.3%). The SPD became the second strongest party, a few tenths of a percentage point behind, and maintained its results from 1984 and 1987. The Greens were also able to hold their own, while the FDP barely jumped the five percent threshold. The big election winners were the right-wing Republicans, who ran for the first time in a nationwide election. They got over 7% of the vote.
