The Church of St. Maria Magdalena is the Catholic parish church in Schönenberg . It is located above high stone walls on a mountain spur above the Bröltal .

Schönenberg became its own parish on November 27, 1866, after its own cemetery had been inaugurated on January 6, 1863. The service initially took place in a chapel of St. Maria Magdalena , which was subordinate to the Lords of Herrenbröl .

On August 30, 1874, the foundation stone for the Church of St. Maria Magdalena was laid. The building was completed after just nine months of construction, so that the church could be consecrated on January 11, 1876. During the time of the first pastor Heinrich Joseph Jansen († 1882) the interior of the church was painted. Due to the culture war , the pastor's post remained vacant until 1884.

Pastor Hubert Jakob Theilen first came to Schönenberg as a parish administrator until, after four years, on January 19, 1888, he became a regular pastor. A new pulpit was purchased under him and the bells previously in the nave were installed in the tower. In 1889 a 13-register organ was purchased instead of the harmonium . In 1892 a 60 m quarry stone wall was built around the church, crowned with an iron grating.

In 1894 Pastor Blum was appointed due to illness. During his time the sacristy and the wall at its entrance were built.

Pastor Wilhelm Esser followed in 1899. In 1899 he founded the Schönenberg parish brass band and bought the adjacent Kamp restaurant as a meeting place and theater. Sisters of the Order of St. Vincent moved in here in 1899, cleaning the church and washing the church. During Esser's tenure, the rectory was expanded to include a brick building.

After his death in 1901, Caspar Thywissen became pastor. He built, largely at his own private expense, a new home for the St. Vincent Sisters, who had now set up a child care school in addition to nursing . Their former house served briefly as a post office and then as a sexton's apartment. Thywissen restored the death shields from the chapel of the gentlemen of Herrenbröl buried there and placed them in the church. In detail it concerns

  • Engelbert von Scheid called Weschpfennig , bailiff von Blankenberg and builder of the old chapel, died in 1546
  • Wilhelm Freiherr von Scharrenberg, zur Weschpfennigsbröl , Scheidt and Hover Bach , died in 1720
  • Engelbertus Christopherus Freiherr von Scharrenberg, Lord of Weschpfennigbröl , Scheid and Saurenbach, died 17th.
  • Adolph Christopher Engelbert Freiherr von Neunkirchen , called Nievenheim, Herr zur Bröl, Scheid and Saurenbach, died in 1755

In addition, Thywissen had the St. Mary's altar from the 16th century restored at his own expense.

In 1909 Franz Heinen became pastor. During his time, the large bell Maria sins labe original concepta was given to the armor, which, unlike the organ pipes that were also given up, was not replaced. In 1914 the cemetery around the church was replaced by a new cemetery.

Pastor Thißen followed from 1927 to 1951. In 1935 he had the church renovated. The confessional and the natural stone floor date from this time.

During the time of pastor Erich Strott, who was appointed in 1951, major changes took place. The church roof was restored in a new slate construction in 1956. Two new bells were added to the small Maria Magdalena bell , which weighs two hundred pounds and was cast from scrap material by the Sieglar bell caster Claren in 1885 . The manufacturer was the company Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher . The larger bell, Christ Rex, Christ regnat, Christ imperat, Christ triumphat , weighs six hundred pounds, the smaller Regina Pacis, Ora pro nobis et pro mortuis weighs three and a half pounds. The rectory was demolished in 1961 and replaced by a new building. The former Kamp restaurant was also demolished and replaced by a new parish hall, which also housed the sexton's apartment and the parish library. In the church, the insufficient oil stove heating was replaced by underfloor heating.
