Schönenberg is a small, rural place in the municipality of Ruppichteroth in the Rhein-Sieg district in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia . Due to its central location, it was chosen in 1864 by the then mayor Schäfer as the administrative seat of the mayor's office in Ruppichteroth . The districts of Etzenbach and Jünkersfeld belong to Schönenberg. Schönenberg was a stop on the Bröltalbahn .

Schönenberg was first mentioned in a document on August 12th, 1512 as the location of the later parish church of St. Maria Magdalena: “... sent Marien Magdalenen chapel up eynem mountains. Schonenberg located ... "

In 1809 the place had 31 Catholic residents.

Mayor Schäfer

The mayor Franz Schäfer, who was born in Niederdollendorf , had already gained experience through the administration of Hennef and Uckerath and was appointed as the first foreign mayor of the mayor of Ruppichteroth by the Prussian district government in Cologne. The then independent communities of Ruppichteroth and Winterscheid belonged to its administrative district . He had to find an apartment quickly, so his first place of residence in 1836 was not in Ruppichteroth, as usual, but in Kammerich . From there he traveled to Ruppichteroth to carry out his official duties. In 1838 he moved to a new apartment in Winterscheid and, on January 12th, relocated his first official acts there. After the construction of the Bröltalbahn, he moved to Schönenberg in 1864, where the mayor's office and later the town hall has been located since then.

Since, contrary to the regulations, there was no municipal coat of arms in Ruppichteroth until March 20, 1947, this could refer to Schönenberg . The legendary Schönenberg knight Dietrich von Bröl was taken prisoner during a crusade and when he returned home he said: "Oh, you beautiful mountain". The corresponding symbols of broken chains, Maltese cross and mountain line were designed by the director of the Winterscheider elementary school, senior commercial teacher Franz Hallitzky.

The chapel in Schönenberg, donated by the Lords of Bröl , was looked after from 1777 to 1823 by the vicar Johann Wilhelm Selbach, who held masses there. It was reported that she was in poor condition at the time. The chapel could hold 150 visitors.

The former St. Vincentstift is now a girls' high school run by the Society of St. Pius X. and the Sisters-St.-Pius-X. is looked after. The church “Maria, Hilfe der Christisten” is looked after by the same brotherhood and is a new building from the 1990s. The Holy Mass takes place in the Tridentine rite .
