The Bröl (also Brölbach or Homburgische Bröl ) is a 45.1 km long, orographically right or northeastern tributary of the Sieg in the Oberbergisches Kreis and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

The Bröl, which runs in the Bergisches Land and Bergisches Land Nature Park , rises south of the Hermesdorf district of Waldbröler . Its source is north of Landesstraße 324 ( Siegener Straße ) at 368  m above sea level. NHN .

As a low mountain range, the Bröl runs mostly in a south-westerly direction through the Bergisches Land or the area of ​​the former imperial rule of Homburg . Shortly below its origin, it flows through an industrial area between Hermesdorf in the east and Waldbröl in the west. Then it runs via Bröl (to Waldbröl) and henceforth through the Nümbrecht districts of Niederbröl , Grötzenberg , Bruch , Winterborn , Gaderoth and Breunfeld to Bierenbachtal . Then, after passing the Holsteinsmühle ( 208.6  m ), to which a mill ditch leads, it flows north past Homburg Castle , which stands on the Schlossberg ( 280.6  m ).

The Bröl then runs further west between Huppichteroth in the north and Homburg-Bröl (zu Nümbrecht) in the south. Then running south-west again, it flows via Erlinghausen , Schönthal (both to Nümbrecht), Herfterath , Ophausen , Müllerhof , Alefeld (all to Much ), Röttgen (Nümbrecht), Bruchhausen (Much), Bröl , Neßhoven (all to Much), Millerscheid ( Ruppichteroth), Höfferhof , Damm , Bröleck , after which - after crossing under the federal highway 478 - the Waldbrölbach coming from the east joins.

Along the B 478, the Bröl flows past the Ruppichterother village of Büchel and the Herrnstein castle ( 124.6  m ), which belongs to the Ruppichterother district of Winterscheid . There are several large ponds in an old arm of the Bröl. It then flows past Winterscheiderbröl (to Ruppichteroth) and Bröl ( Hennef ).

Finally , the Bröl flows into the Sieg at an altitude of 67  m below or southwest of the Münschmühle district of Hennef .

River data, catchment area and tributaries

On its 45.1 km long path, the Bröl overcomes a height difference of 301 m, which corresponds to a mean bed gradient of 6.7 ‰. It drains a 212.709 km² catchment area via Sieg and Rhine to the North Sea .

Landscape image

The course of the river is largely natural or close to nature and is characterized by floodplains , moist alder - ash forests and steep, wooded, sometimes rocky slopes. The entire Brölbach area is registered with the European Union in accordance with the provisions of Directive 92/43 / EEC ( Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive ) under the number DE-5110-301 and is a Natura 2000 area. There are several nature reserves within the area .
