location
The castle is enthroned at 124.59 m above sea level. NHN in the valley of the Bröl between Bröleck and Ingersau on the southern flank of a rock cone that towers over the castle courtyard by around 25 meters. The terrain slopes steeply to the west and east.
history
Herrnstein Castle goes back to a simple fortified house built around 1300, which was owned by the Lords of Steyne (vom Stein). The huys zome Steyne was first mentioned in a contract dated November 15, 1370, according to which Johann von Stein received it from Count Wilhelm II von Berg as a fief . The castle then developed into a Rhenish hillside castle through multiple modifications and additions . Around 1800, significant parts of the complex were removed and rebuilt. Further construction work up to the 19th century gave it its current appearance.
Since 1436 the property was owned by the Lords of Nesselrode . Count Johann Franz Joseph von Nesselrode-Reichenstein († 1824) appointed his grandson, Count Felix Droste zu Vischering , as a universal heir , who according to the testamentary provision, with royal confirmation from October 4, 1826, his name and his coat of arms that of the now expired count von Nesselrode-Reichenstein added. He founded the line of Count Droste zu Vischering von Nesselrode-Reichenstein , which is still located at Burg Herrnstein and also owns Castle Merten an der Sieg. The Herrnstein Castle is also the seat of the “Gräflich Nesselrodeschen Forest Administration”.
In 1809 the property had four Catholic and 17 Lutheran residents.
The exterior of the castle can be visited (usually every first Saturday of the month from 11:00 a.m.). It is not possible to visit the interior of the castle.
investment
Building elements from the founding period (parts of the cellar vault, northern shield wall ) as well as from the Baroque (windows, roof construction and staircase) have been preserved. Some additional buildings were rebuilt in the 20th century according to historical views (1917 east wing and 1953 west wing of the manor house ). Characteristic of Burg Herrnstein the execution of the upper floors of the east is the gable wall of the mansion in Tudor style . This wall is fitted over two storeys between the eaves-side outer walls so that the depth of the northern shield wall and the stepped construction of the southern wall are visible on the gable side.
The southern, moderately steep ascent is dominated by a gate castle with the two original towers, which underlines the fortified character of the complex.
The large ponds at the foot of the castle complex, a good ten meters below the castle courtyard - an oxbow lake of the Bröl - bear witness to the former complete encirclement of the castle and rock cone with moats.
Monument protection
In 2010 the adjoining hut with parts of hallways 1, 2 and 4 was placed under monument protection, as were the pond dams on parts of hallways 1, 4 and 10.
