The castle Honrath is almost completely preserved castle home of a former hill fort in North Rhine-Westphalia . It belongs to the city of Lohmar and is located in the Rhein-Sieg district . The castle house stands in the middle of the village of Honrath , a district of Lohmar, on a ridge gently sloping towards the Aggertal at an altitude of 162 meters above sea level.

history

Together with the neighboring Protestant church, Honrath Castle is the oldest building in the village. The knight's seat was first mentioned in a donation from 1117, in which God (e) fried gave his allod “Hagenroth” to the Siegburg monastery . It later passes through Theoderich von Hengebach to Arnold von Hückeswagen . In 1209 he donated the patronage of the church of St. Margaretha next to the castle - it became Protestant in the 17th century - to the Benedictine monastery in Gräfrath near Solingen , but kept the castle for itself, which was transferred from the heirs of Hückeswagen to the 1259 together with the entire parish Count von Sayn zu Blankenberg is sold. The castle then passed on to the Lords of Loen-Heinsberg as an inheritance .

In 1363 the Counts of Berg acquire ownership, in 1393 the Düsseldorf Collegiate Foundation, and in 1550 a Joist Lüninck is named as the owner. The following centuries saw several changes of ownership, up to the beginning of the 18th century the Lords of Proff zu Menden and in 1825 the Barons of La Valette St. George acquired the estate along with 198 acres of land. From 1930, the property finally came into bourgeois hands.

The castle is registered as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Lohmar under No. 2.

... and stories

It is said about Lünigk von Niederpleis , known in the middle of the 16th century , that he was a bad drunkard and womanizer, inclined to good wines and beautiful women, but not willing to marry. Herr von Etzbach , the father of a girl whom Lünigk had an eye on, finally managed with a trick to marry his daughter to him. He served an excellent Malvasia wine, which Lünigk naturally preferred to drink. But one hot summer's day von Etzbach offered him an inferior variety and only poured the good wine after long insistence, when Lünigk had promised him in return that he would marry his daughter Giesel. The connection between the two was happy and the Malvasia became a special treasure in the castle's wine cellar.

investment

The castle house that still exists today, which gives a defensive impression with its quarry stone towers , was built on Romanesque foundation walls in the 16th century ; the barrel vaults in the cellar and part of the east wall of today's farm building are evidence of this previous building. The Romanesque church tower was originally a defense and residential tower . It was rebuilt several times and later served as a free-standing keep , which was connected to the castle by an archway on the upper floor.

The castle complex, which is still inhabited, cannot be visited, but only viewed from the nearby road. The driveway, garden and adjacent farm buildings are privately owned. The building is a listed building . Nevertheless, the site can be entered, as the residents of the castle also sell agricultural products there.
