The Castle Blankenberg is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a 152 meter high ridge above the victory loop in the district town of Blankenburg, the city Hennef , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The castle is believed to have been built between 1150 and 1180. It was first mentioned in a document in 1181.

The Counts of Sayn , more precisely the two brothers Eberhard I and Heinrich I, transferred the castle and the farm Sayn near Bendorf to the Archbishop of Trier in 1152 after the Archbishop of Cologne Arnold II had them besieged and destroyed, and resided in Blankenberg. Since they were militarily calm, Arnold II let them go.

In 1363 the castle with the city and the surrounding area went to the counts and later dukes of Berg .

During the Thirty Years War the castle was conquered by Swedish troops and occupied for several years. Later the castle was partially razed to prevent other warlords from being a worthwhile destination.

In 1829 the then major Friedrich Ernst Theodor von Delitz acquired the Blankenberg castle hill with the ruins and parts of the old town in order to run a winery there. In 1913 the site was sold to the factory owner Richard Grüneberg.

Blankenberg Castle today

Today the castle complex with four towers and city wall still looks like a compact castle complex. Their condition has been secured in recent years and the ruins have been largely restored by 2006. The castle complex includes a bailey and the main castle. The outer bailey is privately owned and cannot be visited.

The main castle is owned by the city of Hennef. The round keep protrudes from its center as the tallest structure, although it is not allowed to climb. Otherwise, the main castle can usually be visited free of charge during the day. From the Bastion Tower (St. George's Tower) to the south, you have a beautiful panoramic view of the Ahrenbachtal and the Siegtal .

Since 2006 the association "Freundeskreis Burggarten Blankenberg" has been redesigning the bastion area of the castle complex into a herb garden: the castle garden. The collection now consists of over 200 medicinal and kitchen herbs. The castle garden is accessible at any time during the opening hours of the castle complex.

Since 2012 there has been an annual art exhibition entitled "Art at Blankenberg Castle" on the grounds of the main castle. The mostly modern sculptures on display come into their own in the historical ambience of the castle.

The entire castle complex of Blankenberg Castle - including the outer bailey and main castle - was placed under monument protection in 1985. In addition, since 2008 it has been embedded in the monument area "Historical cultural landscape 'Lower Siegtal: City of Blankenberg - Bödingen '", which as essential components on the one hand the city of Blankenberg with the castle and on the other hand the pilgrimage site Bödingen with its pilgrimage church " To the Sorrowful Mother of God " as well as the entire includes Siegaue in between, connecting both sides.
