history
On July 31, 1743, the worst recorded disaster to date occurred in Bendorf: in the afternoon around five o'clock, a major fire broke out in the eastern part of the community. According to a report by the administrator at the time, Johann Anton Rhodius, to the government in Altenkirchen , the fire broke out in the brandy distillery of the hammer smith Bartholomäus Syré in Steinstrasse. According to another version, it is said to have erupted in the forester's house, which was also located in Steinstrasse.
The place was surrounded by a city wall, narrow and irregularly built-up, the house roofs were thatched. The fire destroyed 77 houses, 44 barns, 61 stables and 24 wine press houses within two hours. With a total of 206 buildings, the entire northern half of the town fell victim to the flames. 70 families (approx. 200-300 people) lost their shelter and almost the entire inventory, including the hay and grain that had already been brought in, as well as 1,700 barrels of wine, which was the main source of income for the population at that time. Only the cattle and all people could be saved. Most of the population of Bendorf lived from agriculture and viticulture. A large number of the citizens were therefore outside the city gates in the fields during the fire.
On October 1, 1928, the municipality of Sayn was incorporated into the district of Mülhofen due to economic problems. While the service sector was mainly based in Bendorf, Mülhofen had taken the path of an industrial monoculture with the Bendorfer ironworks . Among other things, because of the unfavorable location for raw material procurement, the orders for the smelters fell. In 1931 the budget of the community of Bendorf closed with a deficit of 476,551 marks. As a result, there was an unprecedented level of mass unemployment. In the winter of 1931/32 and in the following winter, charities got involved.
In 1934 the volunteer fire brigades in Bendorf, Mülhofen and Sayn formed an official service. The voluntary fire brigade of the city of Bendorf today consists of the fire engines from the districts of Bendorf, Mülhofen, Sayn and Stromberg.
On March 16, 1974, the previously independent community of Stromberg was incorporated into Bendorf.

Sights and culture
Protestant church
The church, originally consecrated to St. Medardus , was a three-aisled, vaulted pillar basilica, which was largely destroyed in 1944. After the war, the remaining parts of the nave, the west facade and the north aisle were demolished. Of the old church, only the tower, the choir apse, the choir square and parts of the southern nave wall and the southern aisle remain. The new building from 1954 to 1956 (by Wolfgang Mentzel ), a high quality and typical building of the architecture of the 1950s, was oriented with the altar to the west and integrated the Romanesque remains. In the mid-1990s, the congregation reoriented the interior to the east by moving the altar from the new building into the Romanesque choir. A heavily restored 13th century fresco has been preserved in the apse (Christ as judge of the world with symbols of the evangelists). The Protestant Church is at right angles to the Catholic. Parish church of St. Medardus, with which it forms a structural unit.
Catholic Church
Catholic parish church of St. Medardus with the historic Reichardsmünster. Today's church was built in 1864–1867 by Hermann Nebel (Koblenz) instead of a building from 1790 as a three-aisled basilica with a transept in neo-Romanesque forms. In 2008, remains of painting (around 1870) were uncovered in the apse. Part of the cath. The parish church is the so-called Reichardsmünster , which was added to the two east bays of the south aisle and the south tower of the Protestant church around 1230. It is a kind of double chapel with two small south towers and remarkable architectural sculptures. 1864/67 one opened the south wall to the cath. Parish church and built the organ gallery inside.
