Gappenach is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Maifeld Association , which has its administrative headquarters in the city of Polch .
geography
Gappenach is about three kilometers northwest of the city of Münstermaifeld and three and a half kilometers southeast of the city of Polch . The village extends over a gently sloping terrain to the northeast towards the Nothbach . In terms of nature , the municipality can be assigned to the gently undulating Niedermaifelder valley . The residential areas Birkenhof, Gänsmühle, Geismühle, Mehlmühle and Neumühle belong to Gappenach .
history
In 1215 Heinrich von Gappenaco was mentioned . Gappenach was an imperial village that was transferred to the Counts of Virneburg in 1338 .
Extensive research is available on the history of Gappenach. The Celtic name Gappiniacum is said to be derived from the personal name Gappius as a settlement of Gappinius . Roman villas and Franconian graves have been brought to light several times in the district . The first mention dates from 1257, when a sheep farm is inherited in Gappenache . At the beginning of the 13th century a resident knight dynasty (three silver lilies as coat of arms) appears. The name ( Gapinacha , Gabnach , Gappnach , Gabbenach, etc.) can be found in a large number of donation documents throughout the Middle Ages. For centuries, Gappenach was called an “imperial village free from the emperor”, which did not send jury members ( Heimburger ) to a high court because the emperor was the supreme court lord. In 1338, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian temporarily assigned the site to Count Heinrich von Virneburg.
In the Trier fire book of 1563 , Gappenach is explicitly mentioned with 22 fire places with the addition "emperor-free". It was only after 1589 that the place came under Electoral Trier ownership and under the Münstermaifeld Supreme Court . In 1813 there were 49 houses and 268 people.
The local church, consecrated to St. Maximin , was built in 1670 using older parts and a Romanesque tower. The old altar, known as the “Gappenacher Altar” in art history, is a creation by the Moselle Renaissance sculptor Johannes Gross and, after a changeful fate, has been in the Bantus Chapel in the Bering of the Episcopal Vicariate in Trier since 1957.
In the Middle Ages, there was a not insignificant bell foundry in Gappenach, in which utensils such as jugs and Maifelder pewter dishes were possibly also made.
